Puppy can't bear weight on rear leg

netmumm · 04/06/2022 21:07

Pup hasn't been able to bear weight on rear leg last couple of days. Kind of hops on it and occasionally lifts it completely.

No idea what pup has done, haven't witnessed a fall or anything.

Doesn't cry or wimper at all.

Any ideas?

How old? What breed?

NwNmOldFace · 04/06/2022 21:10

If not weight bearing needs to see vet whether crying or not - could be a tendon or ligament issue, but also need to rule out a fracture. Puppies bones are incredibly delicate

Vet. I can’t believe you have to ask.

netmumm · 04/06/2022 21:12

10 weeks Alsatian.

Have spoken with vet but they said not an emergency and booked consult for Monday. Just seeking any other views in the meantime.

Our vet would have had it in to check it wasn't in pain as some dogs mask it really well, ours did when his knee cap popped out. Really surprised yours hasn't. He is only a baby I wouldn't leave another 2 days and would insist on being seen.

netmumm · 04/06/2022 21:22

Recently had vaccine so not sure if they thought it may have been related to that at all?

I would insist on vet if a couple of days of rest haven’t seen improvement.

coffeecupsandfairylights · 04/06/2022 22:10

I'm really surprised the vet was happy to leave a non-weight bearing puppy without being seen.

It could be anything - very early signs of hip dysplasia, an injured paw, luxating patella, cruciate injury...I'd want it seeing ASAP either way.

SeemsSoUnfair · 04/06/2022 22:18

The vet didn't say it was related to vaccine and can't see how they could be related.

The pup might be in pain, I wouldn't leave it that way until Monday, it is best seen asap. Your insurance will cover weekend treatment/costs

Does it go upstairs /jump on the sofa? Our saluki did the Sighthound Death Scream and hobbled a few times over-stretching as a dpuppy.

It can absolutely be an emergency!!

Our puppy had a serious fracture on his hind leg at 10 weeks' old when he fell of a (low) sofa and the vet receptionist refused to book him in, as she said it can't be a fracture if he's not crying. She said "if it was broken, you would definitely know, as he'd be screaming". I took him to a different vet for an emergency scan and it turned out to be a very complex twisted fracture that required an emergency surgery the next morning! He was just a really brave boy and suffered in silence 😢

Take him to the vet!!!

Sounds like an emergency to me! I’d find a decent vet and get them checked asap
could be a fracture or break and leaving it won’t help

Can I go to a different vet than the one currently registered?

niceaspies · 05/06/2022 09:29

Yes of course you can - just Google emergency vet near me and see who is available in your area

1withme · 05/06/2022 09:30

Have you checked for ticks? A friend's dog started limping around for no reason and she had a big ol' bug stuck in her

cushioncovers · 05/06/2022 09:33

Phone the vet again.

squareframe · 05/06/2022 09:36

I assume you've checked paws/in between pads in case there's something stuck in there?

axolotlfloof · 05/06/2022 09:49

We had this it was an infected claw bed, required antibiotics.
