Another dog visiting our house- how to manage

Hi all. I have a 12 month old cocker spaniel bitch (my first dog). She's lovely and settled, very sociable. Loves other dogs- is VERY submissive initially, and then loves to play once she's got that bit out the way!

My relatives are visiting next weekend, and would like to bring their shiba inu puppy with them, just for the afternoon. There hasn't even been another dog in our house- is mine likely to have an issue with this? Any tips on introducing them in such as way as to avoid issues?

Thank you 😊

Can you let them meet in the park or back garden first? As they are both puppies there shouldn't be a massive problem.

Whenever we have needed to have a non-resident dog in our house we meet up nearby and walk them back together. This way they can see each other first and go in the house at the same time instead of the new dog just coming into the resident dogs space.
I don't know if this is what a dog behaviour expert would say but it has worked for us.

Oh that's a great idea! Yes we can do that. Thanks both

They need to meet on neutral ground first to see how they get along.

And then I would have a plan in place to separate them if necessary - two puppies together could be pretty boisterous and relentless otherwise!

Yes, meet on neutral ground and then a walk back, have done it with ours lots of times with no problem. Also we took his Kong away for the duration of the visits, he doesn't noticed because he is usually having too much fun .

Just make sure there is no food around that they could fight over and maybe toys as well and yes take them into the garden first and be happy bouncy owners, that would do mine. We have our in laws dog over now and again and they are definitely not best friends but with no food or anything they tolerate each other and mostly ignore each other 😀
