Removed a tick but I think the head's still in there.

Dog's first tick.

I used the special tool but think I left the head in.

Will it come out by itself or is a vet needed?

When I did this it worked it’s way out a week or so later. Basically a scab fell off and it had the spikey head in it.

If dog has had tick treatment then the head should fall off. Personally I would check with vet, but I know people wait and see if it comes off naturally and obviously if it looks infected or sore go to vet straight away.

I would get it checked by a vet - the longer the head remains in, the higher the chance of infection.

Over thirty years of dog owning I have never been to the vet with this. They dry up and drop off like a scab, leaving a tiny round scar occasionally. Just keep an eye on it and if it goes red and hot, then think again.

I have found that when you remove the tick, the scab that remains then looks like it's still there, I wouldn't worry but obviously check it on mine he's scabs always seem to last forever

Does your dog have tick treatment? If so it will die. If not keep an eye on it.

If you’ve got some hibiscrub to hand I’d dilute some and give it a wipe over and keep an eye on it.
