Barking dog

My mum's dog has always been a barker. He barked when people visited the house & used to be put in his crate, tho that didn't stop the barking. He also barked constantly every evening, for a couple of hours. The only thing that stopped him was putting him on his lead. But if his lead was taken off he'd start barking again.

My step father died & my mum moved in with my sister and her family (6 adults in the house). He still barks when people visit but is quiet in the evening where he likes to doze on the sofa. When I visit though, his barking is constant. It puts me off visiting. He seems to get into a zone where he doesn't hear anyone telling him to stop. His barking is so loud people have to raise their voices. He stands in front of me, looking at me and yapping, yapping, yapping. I feel bad because BIL gives him a smack ( dog doesnt take any notice). The only way I can stop him is by going into the sitting room & sitting with him on the sofa, which I don't always want to do.

He's about 12/13 years old, terrier type.
Suggestions of what to do, please.

Did you say gives him a smack? That's disgusting. Jesus Christ why isn't your mum investing in some qualified advice from a behaviouralist?

Giving you a bump in case somebody can help.

I hope your BIL does not smack him hard Sad

Is putting him on a lead no longer working? I don't think you will be able to retrain a 12/13-year-old dog. Old dogs - new tricks and all that. Please don't let your BIL hit the dog.

If putting on a lead stops the barking, why not just do that?

And why is your BIL smacking the poor thing? Some people honestly shouldn't be allowed around dogs. I'm surprised your mother allows her SIL to hurt her dog.

Agree about the smacking, it's a horrible thing to do - to animals, to children, to anybody. I find it very upsetting, which is why I'd like to find some way of stopping the barking.

At thirteen I think you'll really struggle to change his behaviour.

Why can't you just put him on the lead if that works?

Thing is by smacking him when he barks it is probably just going to make it worse.

Training works better using positive reinforcement for example giving him treats and praise when something happens and he doesn't bark.
