Picking out a puppy

Hi we're very excited to finally meet our future puppy this weekend. They'll be 5 weeks old and we'll be able to pick out which one we want.

The only problem is I don't know what to look for! They all look pretty much the same (they're yellow labs), some are a bit lighter than others, some are slightly bigger.

Can you tell anything about the puppies' personalities at this age eg. which puppy is likely to be the most shy/cuddly/bossy?

Thanks for any help!

Sit down and see which ones not only come to you but stay with you. Take a piece of old towel and wriggle it and see which ones want to interact with you. When you have, hopefully, narrowed it down, pick them each up under their armpits and hold them up so they can look into your eyes. They should meet your gaze calmly. Then hold them tummy up, like a baby in your arms. Again they should be calm, not struggling. This is how I have chosen all my Labs over decades.

Spaniel - that is so lovely.

This is my litter this evening .. first and last one as we want to keep a daughter of our lab .. at three weeks old they are definitely developing personalities.. we knew almost at once which we would keep .. the one who is always snuggling up to her mum .. we have bossy pups and those who are happy and chilled …. plus the adventurous ones trying to climb out of their whelping box.. they have only had their eyes open for a few days so no doubt we will get to know them much better before we have visitors to see them!

Our boy (now 6 months old) picked us. We went to choose and I was really worried how we would pick one from the litter but he genuinely just came upto us, sat down and just looked at us really intently. It was that simple and he is absolutely the best puppy.

I’d tell the breeder about your lifestyle, family and what you hope for from your puppy and let your breeder guide you.

When we went to pick our puppy there was one that came and curled up on my lap really quickly and slept there whilst the others drifted off to play. I certainly felt he'd chosen me!
