How much does your older dog sleep?

I don't know if I'm looking for trouble but our 9 year old spaniel seems to sleep most of the time!
Flat out all morning, a bit livelier in the afternoon and evening (with lots of little dozes)

She's recently had bloods done and no problem there.

Is this normal? She's the only dog ive had so have no previous experience of older dogs.

Thank you

My girl is 12.5, we have a morning and evening stroll, and apart from me forcing her into the garden at lunchtime for a wee she stays very comfortably asleep 😂. She occasionally still brings a ball for us to play, that’s about it.

My 7 year old stays in bed until lunchtime. He's unbelievably lazy.

Maydaysoonenough · 29/04/2022 13:19

We own sloths. Simple as that.

Just like older humans doze off in the chair or take a nap, so do older dogs for longer periods. !
So long as vet is happy with test results you might expect her to sleep more as she ages. Just keep your eye on her, don’t over exercise her if she seems unwilling or exhausted after a longer walk. Pace things according to her energy levels each time. Let her have peace & uninterrupted time to rest without children interfering in her quiet corner too. Nurture her like you would your dear grandma.
It’s lovely that you are a concerned and vigilant owner.

Sounds like every dog I've owned, to be honest, whatever the age.

My girl is just 7. She goes for walk first thing, then breakfast, and a snooze. A quick play at lunchtime, lunch, then a couple of hours snoozing. Park in the afternoon, dinner, then sleeping right through apart from a quick wee before we go to bed.

My 2 year old is like this! A walk in the morning and he snoozes till lunch. Mooch about the table, another walk followed by more sleep. More mooching around the dinner table followed by more sleeping!

ReadyToMoveIt · 29/04/2022 14:40

My 11 year old dog sleeps basically all day. Mooches around a bit every now and then, has a walk in the evening, sniffs round the garden a few times, but is otherwise asleep.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 29/04/2022 14:44

My four year old is like this.

I really think it's normal - dogs sleep a lot!

dolphinsarentcommon · 29/04/2022 15:11

Thank you everyone for your reassurance.

She's so lovely, and we're happy taking things at her pace. Some days she's happy to go for a bit of a stroll, others she looks at me in disgust at the word 'walk' and so we leave it.

No young children to disturb her many snoozes..
