Does anyone have a Russian Toy?

Hallo, we are thinking about getting a Russian Toy pup. I've probably been researching dog breeds for about 2 years now. I am drawn to RTs due to:

  • size (linked to this is not so expensive & more manageable in the house)
  • easy maintenance (I'd get a smooth coat)
  • exercise levels right for our family
  • temperament

We have kids, gentle and compliant ones, so I'm not worried about them around the dog (they are 6+).

My main question is we have just met up with someone with a RT and her dog is very attached to her and a bit aloof with other family members. This lady was super helpful and honest and said as they got him at 1 this probably made a difference.

Can I ask any other RT owners are they friendly to the whole family or just have one main person?

Thank you!

Are they not extremely rare in the UK? I have never met anyone who had one. I would imagine it's much easier to find a Chi breeder if the small size is one of the attractions.

I don't know much about them but I'm sure they're incredibly rare in this country - finding a good breeder may be a real struggle.

This article says there were only 75 in the whole of the UK in 2017.

Thanks both, I'm on the Facebook group so getting to know the names of good breeders etc. They are growing in popularity I think!

I've known one, a friend of mine had one. She had her as a puppy.
The dog was very attached to my friend and aloof with other people but in fairness, given her small size, she was always in my friend's arms or on her lap.

Never been snappy though. My friend finally got married and had a family and the dog adapted alright.
