This morning early I had a knock on my front door , lady stood there with a large dog, please could you help me, I said of course if I can I said, they had been travelling up from London on way to Scotland, and their dog had decided to poo everywhere in their car poor thing, it was elderly dog , she needed buckets of water to clean inside of car the mats etc and to clean her dog too, of course I helped her by giving 3 buckets of water cleaning cloths etc etc , I said I’m glad I was in to help, my next door neighbour who was out in front garden refused to help, when she asked him as he said his things were round back of the house and he wouldn’t get them, I did say well I wouldn’t leave anyone in distress if I could help in any way, her husband thanked me too, i gave her water for her dogs drinking canister and she was washing the car mats just outside our drive! And they went on their way, it got me thinking I wonder how many people would actually refuse to help in that situation! I thought even if you don’t like dogs would you really refuse someone in distress

Knowing my DH he’d have gone and got the pressure washer out -causing them even further delay!- to hose the mats off.

If they knocked and got me, I’d have supplied hot soapy water, cloths, gloves etc but I’d have to bin everything, inc the bucket 🤮

LeroyJenkinssss · 16/04/2022 13:15

I’m as antisocial as they come but I would have helped out. It would seem really odd to refuse.

My DH who is far more sociable than me would probably have made them a brew and some lunch as well as physically helped clean their car.

Once I had worked out it wasn't a distraction scam/burglary yes I would have helped.

CambsAlways · 16/04/2022 13:17

Yes I too binned it all anotherpassenger

While this is really nice of you to have helped I don’t think it’s fair to judge someone who chose not to

That person has no idea who this stranger on their doorstep is, it could be someone on the nick, or a scam etc etc. While it all worked out ok for you your neighbour didn’t know it would.

Also, lots of people dislike dog poo and if the dog is elderly, the owner could have been a bit more prepared.

Good for you to help but unfair to judge others not to

I can think of lots of reasons why someone would refuse.

Fear of dogs.
They're alone in the house with their DC and don't want to leave their DC unattended while they get stuff/go outside.
Sensitive nose/stomach (dog poo everywhere would have smelt horrendous)
Fear that it might be a distraction burglary.
They don't have stuff to use that could help the owner.
They're in a rush/about to go out.

I would probably have helped if DH was home too, but if I was on my own I'd probably feel reluctant and would send them to the garage up the road where they could get access to a hose and water etc.

I would help in an actual emergency but if that happened with my dog I would not impose on someone like that. I would drive home again or to a garage or car wash. I would not knock on a stranger's door and ask for help with cleaning poo off my car.

Sitdowncupoftea · 21/04/2022 15:17

I would have helped. What an ignorant neighbour.

WeDontShutUpAboutBruno · 21/04/2022 15:26

I wouldn't have helped tbh.

They should have gone to a car wash.

It wasn't an emergency, it was just an inconvenience for them, and they made it your problem because you have to wash shitty cloths and buckets.

nearlyspringyay · 21/04/2022 16:26

I've been in that situation, I wouldn't have dreamed of asking someone. We went to the nearest garage and used the water hose.
