4 month pup has stayed to paw his water bowl

And spills it everywhere. We have tried a no spill one but he’s basically scooping the water out and shunting the bowl so it spills. This has just stayed on Sunday but it’s all the time. Has anyone got a solution to preferably stop this behaviour before it gets ingrained. I’m lifting the water as wfh and putting it back when he goes to the place it usually is but then having to lift it again straight away. Not ideal when we need to leave him.

We’ve got a Neater Feeder, it may help as the bowls are contained.

Mine, same age, has started immersing his nose and blowing bubbles. Luckily the bowl is on a tray!

Have you tried a road refresher bowl? Even if they are tipped upside down only a small amount of water will come out.

tbh I would ignore it and this too will pass - the more attention it gets the more likely your puppy is to do it.

I would also look for other things to direct your puppy on to. (if they really love doing it I would encourage it outside in a large low flat tub bucket and get it on cue)

If your dog can get easy access to outside when you are home I would put the bowl there so if it spills it doesnt matter and then only have to worry when you are out.

Where is your dog left when you are out?

Mark this behaviour use a clicker and reward. This is a fab skill to have and it great for water sniffer dogs! People spend days teaching their dog to do this you have a natural genius Grin

We have this for his beardy dribbles but he’s lifting the middle but out. Swapped to a regular wide based one snd he’s just doing the same. He’s a thirsty little bugger so don’t like to limit his water intake.

He’s happy to be crated but he’s really chilled so often just leave him asleep in the kitchen if out for a short time.

My spaniel (7 months) has also just started immersing his nose and blowing bubbles- good to know it’s a skill as whilst he loves it it’s v messy 🤣, he also finds it intriguing to dip his ears in and then catch the water dripping off them! I’m hoping it’s just a phase as I remember our previous spaniel suddenly discovering how fun his water bowl was and then a few weeks later completely losing interest in it - I’m constantly mopping at the moment and that creates another whole level of excitement 🙄

Pups blowing bubbles is something I’d love to see. Grin

road refresher bowl the middle bit will not come out of this one but your dog may find something else to do with the bowl or refuse to drink from it so dont blame me if it doesnt work. Dogs have a way of being one step ahead of us Grin

LadyCatStark · 06/04/2022 20:31

Our puppy did this, luckily it was summer time and we could keep his water bowl outside during the day and he could go out for it when he pleased. He very rarely does it now he’s 1.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 06/04/2022 20:42

Ours did this as a puppy.

I would just put a mat or something underneath it to prevent spills and get a suction cup bowl so he can't physically tip the whole thing over and just ignore him otherwise.

If you start giving him attention for it, he'll think it's a game and then you're truly buggered Grin

He grew out of it within a few weeks!

Lagattolove · 06/04/2022 20:51

I’ll try the road refresher. He’s quite determined and is scooping water like he’s digging sand 😂

they are funny things aren't they

mine used to do the same but also doesn't do it anymore (he's 18 months). Mine now finishes a bowl of water then picks it up and hurls the bowl against the wall until we fill it up again Grin

Lagattolove · 07/04/2022 12:47

I’ve put the bowl in the garage and left the door open for him to have free drinking but it’s ok to spill. Hoping he will stop if it’s ignored.
