Dog obsessed with eating grass!!

So my dog is 2 years old. He’s lovely, very calm and settled, generally good walking on the lead, gets plenty of exercise and is well looked after. However, for the last 3 months has become obsessed with eating grass. He is fed a good diet of high quality dog food. Whilst I know a little grass is good for dogs’ digestive system, I’m not sure if his diet is lacking something. Anyway I don’t mind him eating a little bit of grass but he will occasionally, with no warning, take a chunk of grass out of a verge whilst on a walk, shake it in his mouth so the earth flies everywhere, and I have absolutely no idea when he’s going to do this. It’s really embarrassing!! Any ideas how I stop him doing this, other than keep him permanently on a very tight leash, which is not practical, sometimes he just wants to sniff the grass?

Mine does this but only when she has a bout of intestinal discomfort. She has a sensitive digestive system, which the rescue warned me about when I first got her. I started her on good quality dog food but she often had the runs plus grass eating. A vet pointed out thst she could be allergic to the food even though it was good and suggested I fed her grain free good quality food.. It has made a big difference. She still eats grass occasionally but usually after eating some soil or old bones in the forest.

magicstar1 · 03/04/2022 13:49

Is he just shaking it or eating it? Mine will eat grass if she’s unwell as it helps to bring up whatever’s upsetting her stomach. But she will also eat some if she’s hungry….if we’re a bit late for breakfast etc.
Pulling up chunks and shaking them is playing to my dog, she doesn’t eat them.

My dog eats grass all the time! She's fine, she just likes it. My previous dog was also quite partial ... if can indicate digestive issues, but some just ... like it. If his stomach is fine I'd let him get on with it tbh. I'm not sure why you find it embarrassing?

Shostaklovhich · 03/04/2022 16:39

Thanks for your replies! He shakes it and then munches on it. I changed his food about 2 or 3 months ago from Hills Science Plan to Step Up to Naturals, as he had a wind problem. Both food brands are good quality, I think. His poop is firm / normal and he has a very nice shiny coat. Perhaps I’ll try him back in the Hills, or give him a chicken and rice diet for a while and see how he goes.

@eyeslikebutterflies It’s just embarrassing when the earth flies everywhere and he’s left a whole in the side of the nice well kept grass verge.

Mine eats the very thick grass that’s only around at certain times of the year. After various conversations with the vet and almost 9 years of this now we have realised that he does it because he likes the taste of it 🤦🏼‍♀️ It’s around right now and walking him is more like taking grazing livestock around a pasture than it is walking a Labrador…

This! I've also compared notes with our vet and her dog goes crazy about eating grass at this time of year. As a former horse owner, I can tell you spring grass is famously sweet so he must just like the taste. In the summer when it's all brown and dry I bet he'll stop.

ApolloandDaphne · 03/04/2022 17:24

My dog loves to eat grass. It is only a problem when it sometimes gets a bit stuck coming out the other end and I need to coax to out! Grassy ass is not fun.

Airfriedpotatowitch · 03/04/2022 17:33

My dog thinks he's a cow I'm sure, sometimes he wakes up in the night going mad to go out I think ooh must need a wee nope its just the grass is at its optimum with a bit of dew and he fancies a graze, stops for a munch on walks too. Nothing wrong just loves it bloody weirdo

Shostaklovhich · 03/04/2022 17:35

Haha yes we also have the problem walking through pastures. If I let him off the lead we are literally there all day!! So I have to choose carefully where I can let him run around off lead. Interestingly he does not eat the grass in the park (unless it’s freshly mown and sitting on top). He’s a lab too so does love his food. Thanks for all your replies, glad mine isn’t the only one who does this, and hope it’s a seasonal thing. Will keep an eye on it and mention to the vet on our next visit.

The grass seems to be particularly delicious right now! For the past few weeks my dog spends ages every morning pottering around the garden and munching on it.

Idratherhaveacuppa · 03/04/2022 18:37

Another grass eater here. The dog, not me.
She has her favourite places and genuinely just likes it. She isn't lacking anything, just is part cow. I do worry about when the council spray weed killer so keep her away from areas I know they spray.
@ApolloandDaphne grassy ass is real. I have been know to utilise a poo bag as a glove to remove grass otherwise it just hangs on in there, swinging about causing untold poo related damage to either side of her bum. Doesn't bear thinking about. I carry a small packet of wipes in my dog walking bag now for such emergencies but would never admit to it being for grassy ass 😂

Ganhame1 · 03/04/2022 18:51

My dog loves grass, generally long grass. She’ll munch on it and gets a look of pure joy when she does. She has a favourite patch by my front door that I daren't cut as she’ll be gutted.
She’s fine with lawn grass but a good juicy long bit she’s all over it. Think it’s just because she likes the taste as she doesn’t eat it as such but munches on it.

Floralnomad · 03/04/2022 18:55

Mine only usually eats grass when he has a digestive issue but if you take him round a NT garden on a lead he snacks at all the plants along the way , thoroughly enjoys himself .

Goldenhedgehogs · 03/04/2022 22:59

As a kid I used to eat grass. Like your dogs there is only certain ones which taste lovely and I used to hunt them out and squeeze out the super juicy core like a tube of toothpaste and eat it. Looking back I was a right weirdo, sampled it again a few years ago and still tastes lovely. My own kids were horrified though.

magicstar1 · 04/04/2022 12:34

I'm so glad I'm on this thread. My dog has been going mad for grass over the past two weeks and I've been worrying thinking she's not feeling well. Must be that tasty grass that's out now lol.

vodkaredbullgirl · 04/04/2022 12:37

I've got 2 lab cows, every morning when the go out.

vodkaredbullgirl · 04/04/2022 12:37
