What's wrong with my dog's eye?

My dog's eye seems stuck looking up. This happened a week or so ago and seemed to sort itself out after a while. We took the dog to the vet to be checked but the vet found nothing wrong. So we just thought it was a one off . But this morning it happened again! Is this something to worry about? Should we go back to vet?

Prolapsed nictatans gland aka cherry eye. Needs an operation to replace it. Specialist job really. Don’t let anyone persuade you to have it cut out as it’s really important for tear production and huge risk of needing long term tear replacement therapy following such a procedure.

Completely agree with the above poster

Oh my, sounds serious. Should the vet have picked up on it last week? She seemed to do a thorough job, putting drops in the dog's eyes to dilate the pupil and looking at the entire eye.

Yep, I too think it's probably a cherry eye.
How old is the dog?
I had a 6 month old with one and he just grew out of it ... but if your dog is a fully grown adult, you are potentially looking at an operation.

She's 2.5 so an adult.

Last weekend this happened but it cleared up by itself after a couple of hours. I made an appointment at the emergency vet as I thought she was having a stroke or something! But then we cancelled since it cleared up and she seemed fine and took her in last Monday to be checked. But her eye was back to normal by then and the vet didn't find any problems.

I just sent the photos to the vet to see what they think

Here are some from a different angle

OK, vet's got back to me. She thinks it's cherry eye like all the other posters here. She's referred us to a pet hospital to have it treated by a specialist as they don't treat it.

Can I just say she’s lovely unfortunately know nothing about the condition. Good luck Flowers

So a quick update. Eye went back to normal last night. We took her in to the specialist anyway. He said it's still a little inflamed inside and gave drops and to wear a cone collar so it can get better. We've been dealing with a recurring skin infection with her so he thinks that she may have been scratching and shaking (as it's also around her ear) which caused the duct to displace so if we can get the skin infection sorted, the eye might be OK. Anyway, he said nothing to do now as it's all in place. If it displaces again, he said to wait 6-12 hours but if it doesn't clear up by itself to bring her in for treatment.
