Fear he has paraphimosis!

We rescued a 1 year old dog a couple of months ago and this evening I found him lying with what I can only assume was a full on erection. (Sorry for TMI!)

This took about 15 minutes to retract to normal and after googling I'm unsure whether this is classed as paraphimosis or whether this just happens?!

I've had 1 male dog previously and never, ever saw a full on erection with him, only the occasional 'lipstick' issue. This was... well, it looked awful to be honest, at first I thought we might need the emergency vet.

Is this usual for male dogs? Is it normal to see full erection with what google tells me is called 'bulbus glandis'? (Worried one of the kids will see!!)

If it’s retracted to normal I would assume he’d just been having a bit of ‘me time ‘ . My dog recently had paraphimosis , his penis needed manually retracting and as it had happened in the night he’d chewed 2 great holes in it . I’ve spent the last 3 weeks back and fro to the vets and with me stretching his foreskin twice a day , it’s a right palaver . I’ve currently got him in a medical suit overnight to try and stop a repeat performance .

My dog had it at 11 months multiple times. Had to have him castrated. That fixed it. If it hasn't they'd have operated to open the sheath wider.

@Floralnomad well there's a sentence fo conjour with. You poor thing. I remember my boys shouting " the dogs got a thing coming out of his Willy!!" when it happened here ...

Our dog is nearly 12 , been neutered since 14 months , they did think about snipping the prepuce but the vet was concerned that with his history he will lay down scar tissue and that will make it even tighter . If it recurs and we can’t manage he could potentially be circumcised but I want to avoid any surgery as he has other issues and doesn’t heal well . I’m down to stretching once a day now and the vet saw him again last week and thinks it is better so we will continue .

Oh crikey this happens to my dog all the time, I never considered it was a problem!! He has a couple of teddies that he likes to hump and that's the end result. It always goes back down to normal though. I can't even be in the room, hate it! But my husband usually keeps an eye on him. Off to Google now...

ReeseWitherfork · 20/03/2022 20:52

Ah ok I've done some googling... I definitely don't think my dog has that. Everything comes out, it's gross, but it will go back down and inside in about 10-15 minutes (slowly shrinking the whole time). Definitely never got stuck. Maybe ask the vet next time you're in?!

Floralnomad · 20/03/2022 21:23

I think it’s ok if it goes back in with no problems , that’s just normal .

BrokenBathroomWindow · 20/03/2022 21:45

Thank you all!!

I will monitor things, hopefully we won't have regular occurrences like this, freaked me out a little bit. The joys of dog ownership...

Yeah my jrt does this almost daily. It goes back in within a minute or so though.

Can I just say... this is why I have bitches.

(Sorry - no helpful suggestions at all. Just eww!)

alwayswrighty · 21/03/2022 08:00

@Motorina it's partly why I'll never have a male dog again 🤣

My husband made me resheath every time.

I can also see the appeal of a bitch in future , although my current boy is the best dog in the world .
