Bit of advice: recovery after being hit by a car

Hi,

My gorgeous 1 year old boy was hit by a car on Friday morning whilst walking with my husband. Complete freak accident.

He was incredibly lucky, no broken bones, Lots of deep bruising around his thigh and testicles. There maybe a compression of his spine, but he is moving ok, and toileting fine, so I’m not hugely worried.

He was pining so badly at vet hospital they sent him home on Saturday afternoon, I think he was scared without us and getting zero sleep. He was pining most of the evening until we put him to bed at 10pm, then he slept until 4.30. We were up hourly after that. Today he cried until about 2ish (low level), but has been looking far better this afternoon, no whining, sleeping properly, more chirpy.

He is badly bruised and anxious, and obviously hacked off that he is confined and wearing a jumpsuit.

Anyone know how long it takes to recover from this type of bruising? He even has bruising and swelling inside his thigh, so it goes all the way through. And any experience of spine compression?

I am so sorry to hear your poor boy was hit - this happened with our dog too at a similar age. He also had some nasty cuts. We found that emotionally he calmed down quite a bit (he was very hyper beforehand), but became very clingy - and jumpy at cars. It was a long time ago but, from what I remember, he was very sore for a few months but gradually built up his strength (he hit his back legs so had difficulty jumping onto things for a while). Follow the vet's guidance and give him lots of TLC.

@Havehope21 thanks for that. We all adore him and want to make him as comfy as possible. I’m hoping it will maybe only be a couple of weeks for swelling to subside so we can remove the jumpsuit and do a gentle walk. Amazing that he only had a small gash on one leg, he was so lucky.
