What big dog?

Lambanddog · 12/03/2022 22:22

Please help me choose!

Non-shedding (I know, I know)
Big but not so big it has a much shorter life span
Intelligent and biddable
Not hound type that I'll struggle to recall - I know recall has to be trained but we aren't rural enough for a dog that can disappear for a couple of hours safely.

We have room/garden/nice walks/experience a few years ago.

I think you need a standard poodle.

weaselwords · 12/03/2022 22:26

Non shedding is the difficult thing. Poodles definitely, or do giant schnauzers shed?

Easterbunnyiswindowshopping · 12/03/2022 22:26

We had a Rottweiler for 10 years. Amazing ddogs.

They were on my list but they can be described so aloof and the one we met was very aloof. Should have added friendly to my list!

They are already on the list - only put off by grooming costs.

They're not non-shedding are they?

Not my big dog then (mastiff) 🤣
He’s clever but generally does as he pleases. Oh and he sheds ALL THE BLOODY TIME.

MarmiteCoriander · 12/03/2022 22:35

I too would have thought of a standard poodle or a cross for the non-shedding aspect? There are also the Komondor which has a dreadlock like coat. No idea of temperament though.

Whitney168 · 12/03/2022 22:39

Everything non-shedding will either have grooming costs or require extensive grooming - are you happy for that?

dollymuchymuchness · 12/03/2022 22:47

A Golden Retriever, perfect dog apart from the shedding. 😂

longcoffeebreak · 12/03/2022 22:48

Just cut the poodles's coat yourself. Not that hard to do.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 12/03/2022 22:51

All non-shedding dogs will need grooming but you can learn to do it yourself if needs be.

The only real non-shedding big dogs will be standard poodles or giant schnauzers.

nancy75 · 12/03/2022 22:51

My new nephew - you know you want one! 😀

Goldendoodle. Not aloof!

I agree with this. Is non-shedding a nice-to-have or a non-negotiable health/allergies issue?

Auntieobem a white one ❤️ And tiny!

German Shepherd - but not the long-haired ones!
Very loyal, protective, lots of fun, very intelligent, Shepherds are for me, the ultimate dog.

Often known as German Shedders!

Mine is blowing her undercoat at the moment and shedding like crazy!

Motheranddaughtertotwo · 12/03/2022 23:18

I had a poodle and he had a beautiful temperament. Totally shit with babies but otherwise he was loving and loyal and friendly and apart from the grooming he was an easy dog to have.

Wintersbone · 12/03/2022 23:23

Portuguese Water Dog fits the bill.

tabulahrasa · 12/03/2022 23:34

“They are already on the list - only put off by grooming costs.”

Non shedding and grooming costs do tend to go together though...

Netaporter · 13/03/2022 07:10

Definitely not a Leonberger then 😂 what about a Komondor? One walks near me and my Leo, he looks like he’s gonna be a thing of beauty.

InkySquid · 13/03/2022 07:16

The desire for non shedding mystifies me. It's much easier and quicker to run a vacuum round than picking grass seeds and twigs out a dog's coat every walk and then the grooming costs on top

wetotter · 13/03/2022 07:29

The ultimate non-shedding dog is a xolo

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xoloitzcuintle

There are various sizes, though the larger ones are about the height of a golden retriever - is that large enough?

I don't know the breed well - only ever met one - definitely intelligent, don't know how biddable
