Parvo Virus - unvaccinated pups

I just wondered if anyone had any advice re puppies going into the garden for toileting when there are regularly foxes in the garden.

We live in an area where vets are now giving a course of 3 vaccinations for pups due to the number of parvo cases. We have foxes in the garden every day so obviously there is a risk of disease from them.

Would spraying the garden with parvo virucide every few days reduce the risk enough? We have artificial grass so essentially a flat , hard surface.

Any other thoughts of how to deal with this? We had a dreadful time switching from pads to the garden with our last pup (did that after vet said no to using the garden until after 2nd vac) so we really want pup outside from day 1 to wee.

Can you use builders netting or something around your back door to create a safe toilet area?

PugInTheHouse · 12/03/2022 20:13

Thank you, yes that could be an option. We have low walls across most of the garden but they are high for about 4ft from the house so maybe put something across there.

We will be having higher fences eventually but there is a bit of a wait to get them done.

I used a metal rabbit run (sans roof) to create a toileting area on the patio until AwkwardPup was vaccinated. Stiff broom and disinfectant every few days.
We get still daily fox visits despite the dog and 6ft fences all round.

My DH made a turf lined, metre high 2x2 metres, pen that was directly from the open French windows for Beepup. Fortunately it was summer so the doors were open and he just popped in and out when he needed to. Trained in a flash!

Can't you bleach and hose down artificial turf? I would net off an area definitely, we had a puppy die of parvo in the 80s, not worth the risk even though it's a pain.

Thank you so much, totally happy to bleach an area etc each day. Just so hard to find info about whether once a day is enough.

Hey @PugInTheHouse You have another pup? How exciting! Are you nuts? Grin

PugInTheHouse · 13/03/2022 21:54

@GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat I know, we must be absolutely crazy, he is an alaskan malamute/czechoslovakian wolfdog Cross so can't get much more different! Hope you are all doing well! We can't wait though, he is a beaut!

He is stunning! Best of luck with them both, I hope it all goes smoothly for you. We are good, Georgiepup is a little star and so easy now. I can't imagine starting over Grin

I always said I'd never do it again but this pup is from a friends accidental litter and I just fell in love with him. We get him in 3.5 weeks. Glad you are all doing well.
