DDog is nearly 15, been fit and healthy. Last weekend couldn’t get up the stairs but all ok apart from that. Over the last 24 hours she’s having trouble standing.
I think it’s time and will get in touch with the vet in the morning.
I’ve never been through this before, can anyone tell me what to expect?
Thanks

Big hugs to you Flowers

God, it's bloody hurts doesn't it. Look after yourself op, this pain will fade in time and you'll be left with all the lovely memories 💐

so sorry, sweetheart. It's so hard to bear. She's out of pain now and I fully believe you'll meet her again. Dogs are angels.

iamme21 · 07/03/2022 19:23

Thanks, I think so too. As I was cuddling her I told her to go and find my dad, I like to think of them together again.

I'm sorry you've lost your companion of 15 years op I know you're heartbroken this evening, i am sure your gave her a great life,
there's lovely support and kindness here. I've left my 11 year old GS overnight with the vet and think we have similar decisions to make over the coming days and have also found support from this post 💐

iamme21 · 08/03/2022 03:52

I’m so sorry, and I hope you have a positive outcome. If you do have to make the decision, I hope you can get some comfort from knowing that it was quick and peaceful.

Thank you iamme21, it's so hard to let them go, when their time comes. Look after yourself through this lonely time x

iamme21 · 04/04/2022 21:47

I can’t believe it’s been 4 weeks today. I miss her so much.

At 15 she had good innings. She was clearly very well looked after to reach that age and had a full and happy life. That's what I told myself when my girl died. She had a stroke too, age 13.

I'm glad tbh that she went quickly like that. I don't think she would have coped well with advanced old age. She was so active and still wanted to be racing after her ball and leaping up to catch it midair but her old bones and joints had other ideas! It broke my heart but it was best for her.

Even when my little hamster died I was devastated, despite knowing they don't live long. But she had a good life. Endless supply of food and human servants to clean her cage, a warm bed and she never knew hunger or cold or fear of a predator. Company whenever she wanted, was absolutely doted on over lockdown, attention on tap.

Better they go quick and never suffer. That's just what pets lives are like, they're like little stars. They burn bright for a short time and their light lasts long after they're gone.

Mindfullisa · 04/04/2022 22:14

Off course you are missing her so much, to have her from puppy to her old age is wonderful, but leaves such a void their presence is gone. We still have our dear German Shepard here, he's been comfortable for the past 4 weeks, steroids have given him a little boost. We've made the difficult decision as advised by our family vet to put him to sleep the week. Trying to make the most of our time, he's been a huge part of our family the past 11 years 💔. Think of you too iamme21

@Mindfullisa I’m glad you’ve had the extra time with him, make the most of the love and cuddles. Thinking of you, it is hard.

Aw thank you, our family vet put him to sleep this afternoon, We knew it was his time and having the time with him the past few weeks has been lovely to give him treats and attention, we do have 3 other dogs(2 young ones and an older girl) Our older girl is very lost too tonight noticing his absence 💔

iamme21 · 06/04/2022 21:09

Sending hugs 💔

Sad our old boy went just over 2 years ago at the age of 14.
I found the actual pts quite peaceful and ok and was pleased to be able to be with him while it happened but I wasn’t prepared for how hard it would be to leave him there afterwards (crying now just writing this even after all that time!) and how much grief we would feel and for how long.
Thinking of all of you going through the same

Mindfullisa · 07/04/2022 04:50

Its lovely to hear you reflect @petalpup , your old boy was with you for 14 years it's difficult to see them slow down and to help them on that final journey. Yes that's true the process of being put to sleep was a peaceful experience, the past few weeks have been tough emotionally as we got closer to the time, we're all quiet lost now without his unique presence 😢 thank you
