growling when greeting

Does anyone else have a dog who growls when greeting you? My mini schnauzer has a very deep, low growl while presenting us with her favourite soft toy when we first see her in the morning.

One of mine does, its like a deep chest rumble.
He does it to his favourite people, it’s so cute

Mine does. To the untrained ear she is growling. It's actually more like a pur/snort. She does it when she is happy. She's very expressive ❤

Both mine do they are very vocal. I think it depends on the breed.

A humongous ridgeback at the dog park used to do this to me, it was slightly unnerving 😂 but owner assured me he liked me.

Ours does, it’s absolutely wonderful to hear! She runs off and grabs a favourite toy for you and then does this growl of pleasure followed by a bit of a wolfie howl

Yup.. my lab does. In the morning or when we cone home… it’s so cute! Also if you get his really scratchy spot!

I get a contented grumble sometimes when mine's particularly enjoying some cuddles

There's also the play growl, most commonly used during a game of tug

Like most dog behaviour, context is important

StillMedusa · 09/03/2022 21:51

Mine play growls.. sounds terrifying to owners but the dogs seem to understand. She also grumbles when sleepy :)

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 09/03/2022 21:55

It's a bit like a cat purr when one of mine does it.

We had very vocal wheaten with different voices for different occasions.
And one of those occasions was a friendly growl on greeting. Low and gentle.
It was lovely.

outingpostnamechange · 09/03/2022 22:07

My mini does. It's excitement, and the toy is to stop mouthing (in his case, anyway) which is what we taught him.

weaselwords · 09/03/2022 22:07

My two groan rather than growl.

MoniJitchell · 11/03/2022 20:36

My miniature schnauzer Cross does this too, almost like a purr. I love it, but people do look at you funny when you tell them it means he likes them 🤣

Not when greeting but ours growls continuously when playing Smile
