Jumping onto beds, couches, chairs

Our little guy is getting on. He is about eleven, and a poodle/maltese cross. He is healthy and happy and still playful. He is quite small, about 14 pounds.

He is feeling hesitant about jumping up as he has taken a couple of spills when he misses the target. He doesn't quite make it and falls off. I have a new recliner chair and he has always liked to sleep on the leg support, between my lower legs and feet. It is higher than my old chair.

He will allow you to pick him up but he really wants to do it himself.

I tried a set of doggie stairs and he would not go near it. But I noticed he jumped first to my huge document briefcase, and the to the couch I was sitting on. It seemed easy for him.

I have looked at foam squares but am unsure as they may be too soft for him to jump from.

Has anyone thought up some magic doggie step that is not a huge set of plastic stairs, but more compact and portable? I really want to help him boost his confidence.

Thank you.

I don't know the answer but your boy sounds lovely and you sound like a very caring owner 😊 In the same situation I guess I would trial and error suitable boxes or perhaps a little step stool or dog ramp.

MrsEricBana · 25/02/2022 22:59

If you google "dog ramp for sofa" various things come up that could work.

Use your briefcase.

@MrsEricBana

I did think of that. I'm not sure why my brain rejected such an obvious suggestion.

Going to try it.

Thanks!

How about a low footstool? Not the ottoman style ones that tend to match suites these days, the ankle height ones. Quite a few options come up if you put ‘low footstool’ into Amazon or ‘old fashioned footstool’ into Google.

Something like this or depending on your style, there are lots of vintage and retro ones on Etsy.

LoveFall · 26/02/2022 00:34

I just ordered a footstool with storage in it that should be high enough and is more stable than my briefcase.

Thanks so much for the ideas. I was stuck on searching for foam blocks for some reason. He really missed a jump today and I hate seeing that.

Here he is showing off his still useful acrobatic skills!

Have you tried giving him glucosamine? Made a huge difference to my 11 year old lab....I actually caught her using a stool as a stepping stone between armchairs earlier 😳

SuperSocks · 26/02/2022 01:04

Awww, how sweet! You sound like a lovely owner. He's lucky to have you!

LoveFall · 26/02/2022 01:07

@TwoBlondes

They are so sweet aren't they? I might try some glucosamine. He doesn't limp or anything but he is, as I said earlier, getting on.
