Anyone groom their Cockapoo themselves?

I need to save some money and thought I could start doing smaller more regular trims myself, to reduce the number of professional grooms needed. Anyone else do this?
What tools shall I buy? Or any tips or advice?

I do my springer spaniel myself. I bought good quality grooming scissors in varying lengths and Wahl clippers. If you can have a session or two observing a professional groomer as they do your dog, that would be extremely helpful.
