Metacam for dogs

One of my spaniels has a swelling in the bottom of his mouth affecting his tongue and saliva gland. The vet believes it is abscess and has prescribed antibiotics and metacam. He has previously had metacam without issue but the problem is he can barely chew or swallow. Any ideas to administer as he won’t open up for me to quickly squirt the syringe in and is refusing to chew food.

Will he drink? Could you mix the metacam with a small amount of chicken stock?

tabulahrasa · 21/02/2022 11:24

You can’t give him it if he’s not eating.

I give mine it mixed with homemade kefir, they love it so its a treat. Maybe mixed with yogurt.

It will rip his stomach lining to shreds if he's not eating. Ask them for Pardale or equivalent which is parecetamol and codeine and much gentler on their tummy.

My spaniels don't tolerate Metacam at all, made our one really really poorly.

Do you think he might be able to eat something more mash like, soaked or yoghurt/watery?

Leonberger · 21/02/2022 12:32

Metacam can be given with or without food.
It’s better to give with food because of the risk of GI irritation but as a one off it won’t do harm and certainly won’t rip the stomach lining.

Can you go back and ask for injectable op? If he can’t eat, drink or swallow it sounds like he needs some more help, did they not offer to hospitalise him or at least check what could be causing it?

The chicken stock worked a treat @crazydineraddict, Thankyou. It took him a few minutes to drink it but all gone.

He has been ok with metacam before but will see how he goes.

@Leonberger he will be back Wednesday if no improvement or earlier if he can’t drink. Then will investigate, he is 12 and not keen on sedation if he can be treated without and is an abscess. He has had a lifetime of issues with his jaw but never been unable to drink properly or eat despite numerous surgeries. Always managed to give his metacam previously on his dinner.
