Eating dog poo

I have two spanners. The younger spanner always tries to eat the older spanner's dog poo. Why is this?

Bloody spaniels 😩

I have a 7YO golden retriever and a 13 week old lab puppy - they are currently eating each other's poo...or possibly each is eating their own. The retriever did it as a puppy but had stopped - he has decided it's a good habit to pick up again after seeing the puppy doing it.

So golden retrievers and labs are gross too!

@littlepeas it's odd isn't it as he won't eat another dog's poo and he likes it to be fresh too 🤮🤮🤮. I usually manage to get to it in time but today they were both ahead of me and I wasn't quick enough. I even have poo bags open and separated now so it's quick 🤣

I had this with the adolescent pup and was on here a couple of months ago, discussing remedies. She made herself really ill with an infection eating something ghastly and the usual solution of pineapple juice in food wasn't working.
We bought a muzzle, on the advice of a poster, and we are still using it, on walks, so that she doesn’t eat the other dogs' poo, or worse items, and at night, where she would sneak off somewhere and defecate and then eat her own poo, the crafty madam.
I don't know if this is just to get her out of the habit, or if we will need to do it forever. It's worth it!

Oh god… our nearly 2 yo poodle cross loves eating her own poo freshly served. And horse, cow and sheep poo. (Though am now more careful as she was really ill following eating sheep poo that was still laced with wormer)
No idea why they do it. She wouldn’t eat her food if it had anything in it. Disgusting beasts!

Yeah my little old terrier kept doing it up until he died. Equal opportunities shite eater; any variety was apparently a delicious snack. Only ever rolled in fox poo though.

Our lab does this! Its frustrating because if you're watching him, he comes straight back in. If you're not watching, he eats it!

I walk two spanners who do this.

One will eat fresh from the arse before it even touched the floor Grin

Lagattolove · 22/02/2022 07:38

I have just logged in to post the same. My pup has started this week. Poops then turns around and eats it 🤢 then looks disgusted when I won’t let him lick my face. I’m getting quicker with the poo bags but not every time. I’ve had dogs for years and only one that liked to eat horse poo but non have ate their own. Grim.

lljkk · 22/02/2022 07:47

2 of the dogs I walk are poo eaters. I thought it was a terrier thing (!) I still like dogs, but more firmly never want one of my own.

MrPenguinsPoppers · 23/02/2022 21:36

I have a scottie who does it intermittently. I find when he does feeding him pineapple cures him as it apparently tastes rancid when it comes out the other end (because standard poo is just lovely isn't it!?)

ilovesushi · 24/02/2022 09:02

Our lab did this as a puppy. She especially loved cat poo! She is a year old now and rarely goes for cat or dog poo, but will still eat cow or horse poo on a walk. I can live with that as I figure it is mostly grass based..

beggingforsleep · 24/02/2022 19:56

My flattie does this. Today was a special treat. She ate it fresh then half an hour later vomited back up on the carpet while I was eating my lunch 🤢.

Dog trainer has said we've made it seem like something she wants by clearing it up too quickly. So now we bring her in before picking it up. But today I was distracted and didn't see her go. I've learnt my lesson.

BaconAndAvocado · 01/03/2022 08:56

Our 7 month Lab tried to eat his own poo.
We got an air compressor spray to earn him off.
