Weird cough... ideas please!

Pickledog was up half the night with a weird cough. It comes and goes- five minutes walking around retching, then settled for a couple of hours, then repeat. It started suddenly- like he'd inhaled a feather.

If it continues I'll take him to the vet, but trying a bit of home care first....

He's producing a little white foam with each cough.
He's been fine in himself- fit healthy 8 yr old dog- he's clearly tired today, as am I, after the shenanigans!
His breathing is fine between coughing jags.

So far I've tried a spoon of thick yogurt to soothe his throat- seemed to help but it's early days.

What else should I try? Children's cough syrup? Honey? Piriton?

(I know which cough syrup for kennel cough, and which piriton).

Sounds like when mine had kennel cough. Luckily ours was a very mild case the coughing episodes only lasted 2 days. We gave her honey and baby cough syrup.

Did it start suddenly, Aria? Mine had it as a pup, when he came home from rescue. I didn't see the onset.

This was as though he woke up in the night, swallowed a feather, and has been coughing it up on and off ever since.

Poor Pickledog! Makes my heart hurt to hear him!

Kennel cough? You need to take him to the vet but let them know beforehand.

Mollymalone123 · 21/01/2022 09:41

Think pickle dog needs the vet-mine has a continuous cough-where she retches etc and she has low level infections that effect the larynx.

ponkydonkey · 21/01/2022 09:43

My dog had a weird cough followed by a sort of weird watery/slimy vomit. Went on for a good few weeks and got worse.

It turned out to be lungworm..

picklemewalnuts · 21/01/2022 09:46

Oh dear.

Kennel cough for our pup started like that. Fine all day then in the evening started coughing, thought at first she had something stuck in her throat. Then was bringing up white foamy stuff and coughing all night. We rang the vets the next morning and they advised no need to bring her in if still eating and drinking. We gave her honey which she enjoyed even if it didn't help and she got over it in a few days.

Chuechebache · 21/01/2022 10:26

Possibly Kennel cough.you need to inform vet when booking an appointment. Please keep him away from other dogs until you see the vet and then take vet instructions.I always vaccinate my dog against Kennelcough, even so she never goes to Kennels. It is far more widespread then people think.

Chuechebache · 21/01/2022 10:27

P.s. dont even think of giving your puppy human cough syrup or any other human medication!!!!

vodkaredbullgirl · 21/01/2022 10:29

Kennel cough, ring your vets and give then details of the cough.

vodkaredbullgirl · 21/01/2022 10:30

Do not give human medication to dogs or any animal.

pilates · 21/01/2022 10:39

Sounds like kennel cough

AwkwardPaws27 · 21/01/2022 11:05

Could be kennel cough - although given he's 8 & the foam I'd probably want to rule out any heart involvement (which can cause fluid on the lungs). Not trying to scare you, it's unlikely unless he's a predisposed breed (CKCS, for example).

Vets may think it's KC, they may want to see him or they may advise home treatment for a couple of data and review if not improved - but I'd see what they say when you call. They may advise a small amount of human medication but they will calculate the dose according to his weight, so I wouldn't suggest trying anything without that advise.

Aria20 · 21/01/2022 11:59

Yes very suddenly! Think she caught it at dog training as loads of dogs there!

Redpriestandmozart · 21/01/2022 21:15

The first sign of a heart murmur in one of our dogs was a cough after sleeping or laying down for a while so I've always been careful with coughs in dogs. Most likely KC but worth having a vet listen as you can never be too careful.

Branleuse · 21/01/2022 21:18

My dogs cough is from fluid on the lungs caused by heart issues, so best to get it checked out x

StrawberryFizz26 · 22/01/2022 08:41

It sounds like kennel cough. Antibiotics & metacam sorted DP out within a couple of days, the vet said it might go away on it's own but it didn't.

picklemewalnuts · 22/01/2022 11:52

He's so much better today. He's eaten and drunk, and is angling for a walk.

He won't be having one!

Presumably when he's a bit better I can walk him on lead in quiet places, avoiding other dogs- how long for, do you reckon?
Will a week be enough? It will feel like a long week, he's a sociable soul.

picklemewalnuts · 22/01/2022 11:53

Google says 10-14 days Sad

Never mind, he'll cope!

tizwozliz · 22/01/2022 13:02

Our vet said a week after coughing stops. Same advice here.

firstvet.com/uk/articles/kennel-cough-dogs

We avoided interacting with other dogs for a further week

picklemewalnuts · 22/01/2022 13:44

Fab! That may be a bit less, if he improves at his current speed!
