What breed is my DDog?

Hi All. We adopted this beautiful rescue boy last week. We were told he is a lab x hound. He is 9 months old, very friendly, great with my children, gentle and loves his food. I’ve only ever had labs before so I know this boy isn’t a full lab but I’m starting to wonder if there’s ANY lab in him! What do you think?

Working type lab x foxhound .

QuiltedHippo · 15/01/2022 18:56

Ooh he's lovely, very labby I think. Please DNA test him and let us know! I used wisdom panel for my rescue and it was spot on.

pinguwings · 15/01/2022 18:58

Looks very like a fox hound. What's temperament like? Does he rely on smell over hearing or sight?

SeeminglyOblivious · 15/01/2022 19:00

Has no one said beagle?

My mum has a beagle x (mum beagle, dad unknown) which looks very similar.

CarlatheJackal · 15/01/2022 19:00

first pic, he's the image of my old wiemeraner. It's something ineffable on the expression

gorgeous boy

FMSucks · 15/01/2022 19:07

@Postdatedpandemic - yes I’m currently working on recall, stay and heel. He has sit, paw and lie down. We’ve lots of kong toys and play tug of war with him. He is currently passed out on the couch after two long walks on the beach. Attached pic of said passed out DDog!

@QuiltedHippo - yes I’m already googling DNA tests so will defo get him done and report back!

@pinguwings - he has a gorgeous temperament, very friendly and loving and we only have him one week. He cries after my son when we walk him to school in the mornings and bounds up to him when we collect him. He is definitely driven by smells, constantly coasting the kitchen smelling food!

I have a Beagle, and while he's probably too large to be HALF beagle I can see a lot of Beagle features in him. White tail tip, ears, stripe down the forehead and nose, the shape of the top lips. Foxhounds and Harriers are larger versions of beagle pretty much.

He's absolutely beautiful, whatever he is anyway!

Shmithecat2 · 15/01/2022 19:08

@Postdatedpandemic

Lab X Weimaraner or Vizla He's pretty gorgeous
This.
Postdatedpandemic · 15/01/2022 19:28

@FMSucks he is probably naturally very soft mouthed. Retrieval games are better than tug of was.

If you ever need to get rid of him, the hairy pointer would like a brother.
The hairy pointer looks like neither of he parents.

He looks like a foxhound/harrier type dog to me.

@Postdatedpandemic - wow what a stunner. Fabulous doggie. I’m afraid I’ll be sticking with this boy, he’s already stolen what’s left of my heart after losing my 3 other ddogs.

I will work on the retrieving so and drop the tug o war. Many thanks for your advice, it’s much appreciated x

Lab x Harrier.

SunshineOnKeith · 15/01/2022 19:54

I'd say definitely some pointer with the ears and markings

FMSucks · 15/01/2022 22:21

Just want to thank you all for your opinions. I will report back when I get his DNA results!

His face (including the eye colour) is the spitting image of one of my beagles. Clearly he's much to big to be a beagle, but I suspect there's a lot of hound in him.

Bouncer500 · 16/01/2022 00:45

Looks very lab to me. I'd say lab x with some type of hound.

TimeToGoNuclear · 16/01/2022 09:39

I would say a lab x English pointer - the English pointer often has the same face markings - have a look at the attached image….

web5.lifelearn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Pointer.jpg

I don’t think it’s a Weimaraner X, as these are usually chocolate brown, as that grey colour of a weim is a dormant choc brown gene…

I’ve got a Viszla’s and all the lab x viz’s I’ve seen are also dark brown.

katmunchkin · 16/01/2022 09:41

That sleeping position screams pointer to me - default 🤣

Keladrythesaviour · 16/01/2022 09:52

I'd go lab X Hungarian vizla (hairy)

ErrolTheDragon · 16/01/2022 09:57

@katmunchkin

That sleeping position screams pointer to me - default 🤣
Lots of dogs sleep like that though. He could be lab x pointer or hound from the shape and colouring.
ChocolateDeficitDisorder · 16/01/2022 10:02

I’ve had two black labs and a chocolate so the golden is all new to me!

Just FYI, the word 'Golden' only refers to Golden Retrievers - labs come in black, liver (chocolate) and yellow.

imamearcat · 16/01/2022 11:00

I first thought some sort of gun dog mix but actually could well be fox hound cross. We used to walk them as puppies for the local hunt, they are really nice dogs. Like you've said though you might need to work hard on the recall training!

TheSandgroper · 16/01/2022 11:47

I think that there is beagle, pointer, lab in the mix. But I know nothing.

littlepeas · 16/01/2022 11:59

He's gorgeous! I'd def say he's got some lab in him.

bunnygeek · 17/01/2022 11:46

I wondered if maybe even Foxhound/Trailhound instead of Beagle x Lab - as he's got a hint of the white tip to his tail.
