Talking away at your dog - is it counterproductive?

Do you think chatting away to your dog is confusing or counterproductive? I do this all the time but have started wondering if it makes it harder for the dog to separate out the words he knows from what must feel like gobbledegook he may think he’s supposed to understand. He head tilts at me a lot.

And perhaps I should only speak when it’s a clear message - time for a walk now, you can jump up on here etc. which he does understand.

I started by saying "talk, talk, talk" with an opening and closing hand signal commonly used for talking and then introduced "stop" with a flat hand moving from left to right. Now I can say "stop" and use the hand signal and my dog will stop "talking"

I will try this.

The buttons sound very interesting too.
Though I don’t think our dog actually wants anything when he’s barking, he just wants to play. The main problem is I do t want to play at 10/11pm. I want him to cuddle but he’s a dog that cuddles only on his terms.

If I'm out at the clothes line I will chatter away to the dog always telling him what a good boy he is(not true btw),I would think he loves the chatter plus I kiss him( his freezing cold nose on my nose or cheek.I do believe they understand a lot of words,he also has his very own language especially when I mention the WALK word, and I try to mimmick him and he gets so excited you would swear a walk to him is like winning the lottery and he gets one or 2 walks every day

@LadyCatStark does your modified song begin with the words “soft puppy, warm puppy” by any chance?

Dammit, you've created the earworm. Now everyone must suffer.

Soft puppy, warm puppy,
Little ball of fur
Tired puppy, sleepy puppy
Grr, Grr, Grr.

Not quite it goes:
Soft puppy, warm puppy
Little ball of fluff
Happy puppy, sleepy puppy
Woof woof woof.

You’re welcome 😂
