Bed for Golden Retriever

Hello, hope you and your pups had a lovely Christmas!

I'm looking for recommendations for a bed for a golden retriever. She's currently 13 weeks old but growing fast... We originally thought she'd sleep in the crate but she's not massively keen on it and I'm happy not to do crate training - our kitchen is puppy proof.

I've seen the Silentnight Airmax and it looks comfy but would prefer to buy something other goldens recommend 😊

We have labs…
And swear by Tuffies beds

Comfy, easy to wash, easy to get extra covers, and last forever

The nest is lovely, and the fleecy flat beds are also really cosy

Thanks, will take a look! I have seen loads that I'd happily sleep in 😂 but I don't have a fur coat so no danger of me being too hot...

Mine much prefers the cold hard floor. She has a couple of proper beds but often rejects them in favour of the floor. Weird. But as she is getting older, (6mos now) she is sometimes choosing a sofa instead.

I'd just watch and see where she likes to sleep, then buy accordingly.

Mine is 15 months now and has destroyed every bed we've bought him. He now has a selection of blankets in the crate that he rips at will 😂

Grumpyosaurus · 26/12/2021 16:41

Tuffies fan here too. The mattress is waterproof, and the covers are washable and hard-wearing, and you can replace them if they wear out.

100% recommend.

TooMinty · 26/12/2021 16:44

Hmm, she does like the floor and also the sofa. Blankets are unshredded so far but she doesn't have her big teeth yet so we'll see...

We bought Vet Bed to go in the crate but she keeps weeing on it 😡

I’m also a lab slave and he likes

the floor
the sofa (has his own in the kitchen as well as sitting with us)
the footstool (we have a big 1m x 1m square one)

He had a couple of designated dog beds and either ignored them or ate them.

I’ve seen lots of big dog owners recommend the HiK9 raised ones. Probably ideal for older, arthritic dogs who find hard floors painful and can’t climb up to sofas and human beds.

ponkydonkey · 26/12/2021 16:46

Have a tuffie bed
But she's 3 now .... when she was a puppy she just ate all her beds so I bought cheap ones until she grew out of that faze

Oh yes, vetbed in a crate (door open) too. It’s the only blankety thing he doesn’t shred. Plus it washes really well and doesn’t stink.

It's just as well it washes well....

Have looked at Tuffies and they look good but pretty expensive, might wait til she's older and get a cheaper one now in case she chews/wees all over it.

We have two large Labs and depending on what takes their fancy, they sleep on

  • an orthopaedic memory foam dog bed
  • a crate pad with a piece of vetbed on top
  • a crate pad with a blanket
  • the sofas with blankets

The sofas are the most popular though...not much room for the humans Grin

@TooMinty I have a golden retriever and when he was a puppy he just slept on the vetbed in the crate (washed regularly!). I didn't want to buy an expensive bed until he was bigger. When he was a little older I put a mat under the vetbed.

First proper bed I bought was the Hik9 raised bed which he really likes. Then I bought the Orvis bolster bed. I found that he (like many Goldens) likes to sleep / rest with his head resting on something or stretched out upside down. The Orvis is good for both sleeping positions and Hik9 with one of his (many) toys - a nest bed like the round Tuffies or wraparound Orvis wouldn't work for him. The Hik9 is also great in the summer as keeps him cool - he has the vetbed cover but I take off in the summer. The Orvis is lovely and cosy. Both have easy to wash covers.

When he was a puppy I bought him one of these www.amazon.co.uk/SnuggleSafe-Comfort-Cushion-without-Headpad/dp/B000OYFEZI/ref=pd_sbs_5/262-2426333-7699941?psc=1&pf_rd_p=b3232d54-1e37-435b-b370-81046eef630a&pf_rd_r=X0ZSVVM4PABZ727N77QP&pd_rd_wg=8zw6U&pd_rd_i=B000OYFEZI&pd_rd_w=8MXCs&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&pd_rd_r=77a69257-b9f5-4d7d-86ce-fa8b60b17c58 with the inner heatpad. He loves this still at 2yo.

TooMinty · 27/12/2021 23:39

She does like a cushion to put her head on so that's a good shout. And sleeping upside down in an undignified position...

I don't know why she wees on the Vetbed so often - generally she is good and wees outside or on puppy pads if she can't get out. But she hardly ever sleeps on it so I want to get her a new bed.

Thanks for recommendations 😊
