How to stop dog eating cat poo?

We keep finding cat litter in dog's bed and we've caught him with his head in the litter box. How can we stop this? We have old cats who can't jump up onto high surfaces so putting it higher up isn't an option.

Honestly, we weren't able to stop our dog with any amount of training. Nothing was more rewarding to him than cat poop. He'd leave it if we caught him - but he'd wait until we were asleep and do it then instead.

The only thing that worked for us is preventing his access to the litter box by putting it in the bathroom. We use a tall baby gate that has a cat flap built into it. Cats can enter and exit, but he can't.

Do you have an option to put the litter tray somewhere he can't get to?

The only thing you can do is put the litter tray where the dog can't access it, or get a
covered or top-access tray.

The only way we managed it was to put it in a room with door shut and a cat flap the dog could not get through.

Still have hysterical visions of the dog with his head through the top access cat litter tray and him getting stuck and banging about the bathroom trying to knock it off

We put baby gates up so she can't get into the kitchen or bathroom, where the litter trays are. My biggest fear was her ingesting litter as well as the poo and ending up with a blockage

It can’t be done I’m afraid.

Agree with this.

When I got my dog as a puppy 10 years ago I had two 17 year old cats who didn't want to do out so much any more and 3 litter trays.

The only way I managed to stop her eating the cat poo was to make sure I got to it first. Didn't always work obviously.
