Breeders - is it better to phone?

I'm starting my hunt for a nice-quality Wire Fox Terrier puppy, that will be our family pet but which we can show a little for fun. My DD used to be quite serious about Junior Handling and competed a lot, and i think she's hankering to get back into it.

I've been trying to make contact with some breeders, but almost all my emails have bounced back! Do most breeders prefer if you ring them rather than emailing? Can anyone recommend a good WFT breeder personally? We like Shoalhill, Brocolitia, Wyregait and Mcleanwyre dogs, for type.

Hi. I can’t help with that breed specifically but from my experience over the last year researching breeders, most do prefer if you go to the effort of phoning them. I think it shows you are actually serious

The breeder we are on the waitlist with specified in her details that she prefers email contact in the first instance. She was the only one though, most seem to prefer a phonecall.

Several of the breeders I know temporarily shut down their inboxes due to constantly overwhelming numbers of enquiries throughout the pandemic. So that might be having an impact as well.

Just had a quick google for your and found that the Wire Fox Terrier Association have a puppy co-ordinator and find a puppy service. We got our Wheaten Terrier via a similar process many years ago - took 18 months for a pup to be available, but she was worth the wait.

yes phone

I would not entertain someone who emailed, unless they did a big paragraph about themselves either

Phone. You need to be interviewed Grin

I would phone too.

I found asking on the breed Facebook group generated a lot of response on who best to contact too!

Hi OP,

Definitely contact the clubs and make it really clear you're looking for a puppy with show potential, emphasise the show potential and higher level showing..aim high as otherwise you might be fobbed off with one that costs you as much to buy but isn't worth showing! I think the breeders that have been round a long time tend to prefer a phone call to be honest but make sure you ring at a good time ..usually around lunchtime on a weekday or after dark but before 8pm. Show folk often retire to bed earlyish and get up early!!

Sonorra and Furlongfox I've found are really welcoming and helpful as are Saredon. Are you on FB? There are a few show terrier groups that you might find can point you in the right direction. Can you get the NEC on the 11th December? It's terrier day at LKA..likely a decent entry as its a popular show! Good luck, it's great to see youngsters in the showring, My kids are keen breed exhibitors as well as junior handlers 🙂
