Flatulence - help!

VanCleefArpels · 17/11/2021 08:54

Extremely flatulent 12 year old lab is seriously getting me down. The house just smells so bad. We’ve tried probiotic food and supplements to improve digestion but it’s clearly not working. When I’ve mentioned to the vet they’ve just laughed it off saying “well that’s old dogs for you”

I can’t bear it. Please tell me there’s something that can be done!

What food is he on?

VanCleefArpels · 17/11/2021 09:10

Tails.com allegedly formulated to be gut friendly

What is the food based on?

I would be looking at a food change really, but you could also try something like a charcoal or slippery elm supplement.

Arden Grange Sensitive is based on white fish and potato and is a decent gentle food.

Thanks - have tried charcoal and it didn’t make a difference apart from making the poo black!

Will look at the Arden Grange food

What's the make up of the Tails mix? Is it heavy in grain? Maybe try a hypoallergenic mix for a month? We have just switched one dog onto Harrington Hypoallergenic to see if it helps with her chewing on her paws etc.

VanCleefArpels · 17/11/2021 22:07

It’s low grain and hypoallergenic . Vet says it’s a good option.

Tails is nutritionally nor very good. Milliies wolfheart, canagen, Arden, etc might be better as suggested by folk above. My pup only has stinky farts if she has eaten beef. She could clear a room after that. Grim.

Goawayangryman · 17/11/2021 23:02

I've just properly investigated this tails stuff on allaboutdogfood.com. Blimey. Huge carb content. I'd get really bad farts eating that!

ContadoraExplorer · 17/11/2021 23:25

Our dog was never stinky with Tails but his poo was pretty soft and he had gland issues. We switched to a grain free from the local pet shop and they're much better so his glands are much better drained. I know they advertise as being by vets etc but I don't think they're great quality.

icedcoffees · 18/11/2021 04:16

Tails is really poor quality food unfortunately - no wonder he farts a lot Blush

I would be switching food ASAP.

CelloYouveGotABass · 18/11/2021 06:23

We had this issue until we swapped to butchers - the horrible tripe stuff in tins. Old dog too, never hear or smell her any more!

Cowpad · 18/11/2021 06:27

Are you sure it is not his anal glands.if the anal glands dont empty naturally, you need to empty them(or vet).

VanCleefArpels · 18/11/2021 07:11

He does have issues with his glands from time to time- but don’t see how this causes loud farting? Interesting comments in Tails food, as my get said it was good! I’ve asked for grain free for the next delivery, let’s see if that makes a difference
