Is paw licking anything to worry about?

My two year old terrier cross has always licked his paws, mostly in the evening. They're not sore and I've mentioned it the vet who wasn't concerned.

Is it likely to be a comfort/behavioural thing?

Pic of the paw licker 😁

What an adorable looking dog!!

It can be a sign of allergies/yeast infection if the fur is pink. If he's always done it then maybe it is just a comfort thing...

He's gorgeous. My ddog is little and gets stung by stinging nettles sometimes on our walks if I'm not careful. Could it be that?

amsadandconfused · 10/11/2021 22:02

My JRT did this and she had a problem with her claws . The vet had to cut them every few months under sedation.
Your doggie is absolutely scrumptious…beautiful 💕

Aww thanks for all the doggy love 😁 he is gorgeous if I do say so myself 😉

Thanks for your thoughts, I wouldn't have thought stinging nettles but he is a wimp baby so could be I suppose.

Amsad what was the issue with his claws? Mine is a jrt cross.

My border is a paw licker, no allergies so pretty sure it's a comfort thing.

thefarmerhasawife · 11/11/2021 07:43

My dog licks her paws because of allergies or when she's really stressed so it could be anxiety? Hope your dog is ok!

Joystir59 · 11/11/2021 08:04

My JRT only does this when he feels stressed.

TheSquashyHatOfMrGnosspelius · 11/11/2021 08:06

I think they do it when they are in pain.

LivingLaVidaBabyShower · 11/11/2021 08:07

My yorkie loves a paw lick. They are fine and healthy though.
She does sneeze when excited so poosibly some allergies.

lightswitchmoment · 11/11/2021 08:08

My JRT cross licks her paws a lot and hates her feet touched. She has pink skin but it doesn't appear sore and is very happy.

Sweetleftfood · 11/11/2021 09:16

My one is more of a paw biter/licker, but I think he is trying to get bits out of his fur, he is very hairy/fluffy so I make sure I brush them everyday

amsadandconfused · 11/11/2021 09:34

@Girliefriendlikespuppies her claws were very brittle and the claws on both front feet particularly third / fourth toe ,actually curled and dug into her toe pads . If they were left her pads would become sore . Licking was always a sign that they were starting ro stress her .
My other doggie who is a parsons terrier licks her feet if stressed or ? bored !

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 11/11/2021 20:32

Thanks for all the replies, I don't think he's in pain or stressed but obviously can't be 100% sure. It could be boredom as he often does it at quieter times of the day but he gets plenty of exercise.

I don't think it's his claws, I've had a quick look and they're not too long 🤷‍♀️

It does sound like it's quite common in terriers?!
