Ripped dew claw - how should I be treating?

Last night our whippet pooch tore his dew claw off during his walk. Sad

It looks like it’s totally off with the quick totally exposed, although it’s not been bleeding as far as I can tell. Pooch seems to be in a bit of pain with it, his paw seems to throb occasionally and he’s been licking it although he’s still using the paw as usual.

Should I be taking him to the vets or can we treat at home? Obviously no long walks or vigorous exercise for a while which he’s not going to enjoy!

I’ve attached a picture of pooch just because Grin

A few years ago my crazy lab tried to leap over a fence, overestimated his capabilities, and ripped his dew claw 😰 It was awful! Took ages to stem the flow of blood and it was literally hanging off. I took him to the vets and he had to have an operation to remove it and stitch up the wound.

Without knowing how bad it is, it's hard to say how you should treat it...but if it's as bad as my dog's I'd say it needs a vet.

Huge hugs for your guy...he's gorgeous ♥️

Dog recently did this and we took to emergency vet as she was obviously in pain even though only a little blood. Antibiotics and local anesthetic to numb the area for a few hours.

Vets asap. According to our vet a few claw is not just a claw it’s more of a thumb so needs to be seen. Very painful for the poor dog too, ours his ripped hers off several times now.

Mine ripped his claw off the other week. I bathed in salt water until I could get a vet appointment. I had to wait a few days. The vets obviously don't class it as an emergency. He was prescribed painkillers and antibiotics. It ironically did not bother him.
