Dog flea & worming.. can/should you do it yourself?

Ddog is lovely, but oh so expensive (and worth it). I've read that generally high street stuff for worming and fleas is rubbish and that you have to go with a regular plan/prescription from your vets, but I've also read that stuff like Drontal OTC might not be too bad.

Your wise words would be much appreciated on the matter!

Advantage is supposed to be ok for flea treatment
Is Drontal not for worms?

I get vet level stuff for FudgeCat from Mole Valley Farmers. Drontal for worms and an own brand clone of Advantix for fleas/ticks. Seems to be effective.

The stuff in supermarkets is useless!

I've never paid for prescription treatment and none of my pets have ever had worms or fleas.

It took me 6 months to get my dog into the vets for an appointment (because he was terrified, not just because I didn’t get round to it, lol)

So we’ve been having to use non prescription stuff.

Judging by how many ticks I’ve had to pull off him and trying various products... none of them work.

Non prescription stuff is pretty weak.

However the need for such regular worming and flea treament is now being highlighted by the BVA and a change to the timing of treatments etc is being looked at. This is due to environmental issues and resistance to the drugs (this has been bought to BVA attention for years but hey better late than never)

You can worm count your dogs and then treat IF they have worms - Most times they will not have worms.

I have had dogs for years and never had fleas on any of them. I do check them regularly and take sensible precautions.
