Stopped and asked to see poo bags - is that acceptable?

Was walking dog today on the grounds of a housing estate (nothing fancy, but the green areas are managed privately, yet it is public accessible land and permitted for all dog walking nontheless) and the maintenance operative said, 'We've had some incidents here with people not picking up and I take their photo and get them prosecuted, so can I check do you carry bags?' Me, 'Yes, definitely, gives the rest of us a bad name, no excuse!' smile and nod. Him, after a long pause... 'Well, can I actually see them then?' 'Er...ok', show bags. Now, though, I'm feeling peeved that he didn't trust my word and at his rather bullish attitude (also thinking he was emboldened by the fact of me being a woman and younger than him).. Should I take it on the chin, or was he being OTT?

Presumably he would only photograph you if you were caught not cleaning up. I don’t see it as a big problem to ask if you have poo bags. It’s good he’s being proactive.

SpangoDweller · 26/10/2021 14:02

I wish I had the confidence to do this rather than giving non-clearers a hard stare.

Fupoffyagrasshole · 26/10/2021 14:03

Oh this kinda think annoys me tbh 🙈🙈

We went to take a selfie of myself and husband and his son at airport the other day (sending stepson home after not seeing him for 2 years (covid)) and the security man shouted at us white aggressively - no cameras allowed out it away !! Wtf I never knew this was a thing we weren’t even in the queue or anything - anyway it was 6am and I was tired and hadn’t had coffee yet so I actually shouted back - ok - you could try that again and say excuse me no cameras allowed out it away please - ffs
He wasn’t impressed

Can’t stand this kind of shit (hahahah)

Total power trip tbh

cuttlefishgame · 26/10/2021 14:06

They have clearly had issues with inconsiderate owners leaving their dogs' turds all over the place so yes, I think this was completely justified.

PlanDeRaccordement · 26/10/2021 14:09

Yes. He’s not a random vigilante accosting you, he’s the maintenance for the estate you were dog walking on and has obviously been instructed to do this as part of his job.

SeasonalNamechange · 26/10/2021 14:09

nah...i wouldn't show him

but our local dog bins also have a free bag dispenser.....often runs out of bags, which kind of proves many people re caught short without

me and dp took our dog out each assuming the other had a bag, we didnt. dispenser empty. i used a face mask in the end

humans do forget occasionally

but he can only ask....not demand. nothing he could do if refused. nothing
Quickchangeartiste · 26/10/2021 14:12

That would tick me off.
I always carry bags, I find them in every coat pocket, but other than the dog warden, I cannot imagine whose business it is unless my dog has actually pooped and I am ignoring it. ( which I would not do).

Not sure by what authority he challenged you, but I would politely tell him to get lost.

Yep.
WhatDidISayAlan · 26/10/2021 14:15

The park wardens do it near me - you get a talking to if you don’t have more than one.

Scotishscotus292 · 26/10/2021 14:18

I'm absolutely sick to death of seeing dog shit everywhere so in this instance I think good for him and we need more people doing this or the problem will never be resolved. I cant imagine anyone who doesn't carry bags and pick up would actually admit to it so I understand why he asked to see the bags.

DOINGOURBIT · 26/10/2021 14:18

It's not acceptable, no. Dog may have already done its business, you may have disposed of it responsibly and not have any more bags on you - which to my mind is fair enough. No one can presume which dog / owner is at fault and unless CCTV evidence captures footage he is out of order mentioning it.

Viviennemary · 26/10/2021 14:18

I think its fair enough. Dog muck is vile. If you had the bags then show them. I bet you didn't.

PermanentlyDizzy · 26/10/2021 14:19

I wouldn’t mind being asked if they were polite, after all those that don’t pick up do give the rest of us a bad name and I would be pleased they were taking action to deal with it.

If they were rude though, I would politely suggest they would probably get a better reaction and more willing responses from people if they were polite. I may also suggest that perhaps putting up a few notices to warn people they may be asked might be a good idea as well.

Ginmakesitallok · 26/10/2021 14:19

Nope I wouldn't have shown him. What a tit.

DriftingBlue · 26/10/2021 14:20

Given how inconsiderate a subset of dog walkers can be, I don’t think it was too invasive.

plinkplinkfizzer · 26/10/2021 14:23

I am sure there is a council area in England where you can be find for not carrying poo bags . I can't remember where but there was publicity about it .
I have in the past forgotten them and rushed into a spar to beg a plastic from them .

Cuck00soup · 26/10/2021 14:25

Fuck that shit! I have handfuls of bags as I have two dogs. I clean up and take the Pooh home too rather than tying the bags to the gatepost.

I would be seriously unimpressed if anyone demanded to see the bags though.

Snoken · 26/10/2021 14:28

I think it’s fine to show I have bags on me if asked. It’s not like they are asking me a deeply personal question about my medical history or anything.

Saucery · 26/10/2021 14:29

I would have politely told him he would just have to take my word for it. I always have way more poo bags than my dog would ever need, always pick up. Dog walkers like me aren’t the problem. And yes, I expect it was because you were a woman on your own that he asked you.

madisonbridges · 26/10/2021 14:31

It's a bylaw round us that you always gave to have a minimum if 2 bags on you at any time. So you have to set out with more than 2 bags in case you use one. I think its great he asked you, and it's great you co operated. That should become the norm, then those that don't do it get fined and start to change their behaviour.

As for not taking pictures at airports, they're private buildings so if they feel it's a possible security issue, they're fully in their rights to stop you.

ErrolTheDragon · 26/10/2021 14:34

Not sure by what authority he challenged you, but I would politely tell him to get lost.

If he's the poor sod who has to clean up other people's dogshit, it seems reasonable enough a request. The exchange as described by the OP seems quite civil. His manner may have been a bit overbearing but he's probably had too many selfish inconsiderate people to deal with.

Comefromaway · 26/10/2021 14:37

Suppose your dog had already done it's business and you had disposed of the bags?

ErrolTheDragon · 26/10/2021 14:41

@Comefromaway

Suppose your dog had already done it's business and you had disposed of the bags?
Id say, 'my dog has already done his business and I've disposed of the bags in the bin, thanks, bye!' and continue with my walk, of course.
