Stopped and asked to see poo bags - is that acceptable?

Was walking dog today on the grounds of a housing estate (nothing fancy, but the green areas are managed privately, yet it is public accessible land and permitted for all dog walking nontheless) and the maintenance operative said, 'We've had some incidents here with people not picking up and I take their photo and get them prosecuted, so can I check do you carry bags?' Me, 'Yes, definitely, gives the rest of us a bad name, no excuse!' smile and nod. Him, after a long pause... 'Well, can I actually see them then?' 'Er...ok', show bags. Now, though, I'm feeling peeved that he didn't trust my word and at his rather bullish attitude (also thinking he was emboldened by the fact of me being a woman and younger than him).. Should I take it on the chin, or was he being OTT?

Sometime ago I heard on the Jeremy Vine show on radio 2 that dog walkers needed to have at least 2 poo bags with them.

Palavah · 26/10/2021 15:59

@DOINGOURBIT

It's not acceptable, no. Dog may have already done its business, you may have disposed of it responsibly and not have any more bags on you - which to my mind is fair enough. No one can presume which dog / owner is at fault and unless CCTV evidence captures footage he is out of order mentioning it.
It's important to take more bags than you think you will need. Someone tried to walk off from a massive sh1t left by their dog on our pavement because they'd already used the bag earlier in the walk. I brought them one from inside.

Kids, wheelchair users, mobility scooter users, general pedestrians shouldn't have to deal with dog waste that was more than you'd anticipated.

RedMarauder · 26/10/2021 16:02

@HazelandChacha

I’d have no problem at all showing bags and proving I’m a responsible dog owner. I can’t stand idiot owners who leave dog shit around. DH accosted a bloke walking his dog whilst dropping his primary school daughter off to school. He’d let the dog crap on the pavement, where loads of little kids would be skipping merrily to school, but didn’t even have a bag! DH handed him a tissue and told him to pick it up.
Tell your husband well done.

My DD has had to learn to look out for dog turds on the pavement from the age of 2.

tizwozliz · 26/10/2021 16:03

@goodwinter - our dog is still a pup so may yet change but in 3 months of walks, I've only had to use 5 poo bags whilst out and about. She has never pooed on a morning walk.

PollyRoullson · 26/10/2021 16:06

Poo bags are sooo useful and the in accessory and can be used for way more than dog poos thats why you should carry loads all the time. No worries if they are in your pocket when you wash your clothes they wash and tumble well Smile

Put your mobile in when it rains
Put over your boots when it is really wet.
Pick blackberries pop them in a poo bag
Collecting conkers with the DCs
They have been great during covid to use as hand protectors when filling up with petrol
Carrying dog treats to keep you pockets clean
Put rubbish in in the car

so many there is even a book about it....

SirenSays · 26/10/2021 16:08

I'd have been stuffed, I have one Foster boy who will only go in the garden so I've never ever taken bags out for him.

ShirleyPhallus · 26/10/2021 16:13

I hope everyone is using biodegradable dog poo bags as it’s a total waste of plastic to be using them for 18 different uses as listed!

ShirleyPhallus · 26/10/2021 16:14

Also when did poo become pooh?!

Derbee · 26/10/2021 16:14

This exact thing happened to me. I showed him my poo bags, and went on my way. Didn’t mind at all. I hope he caught people without poo bags and did something about it, as it’s horrible to step in poo because last bastards don’t clean up after their dogs.

Etonmessisyum · 26/10/2021 16:14

If you don’t have more than one isn’t that because your dog has ‘been’ and you’ve used them, I take loads though as mine does many poops on a walk which is fun.

DampSquidGames · 26/10/2021 16:18

Sounds fair enough to me. It must be someone’s dog shitting so checking sounds reasonable.

Mydogisagentleman · 26/10/2021 16:18

I wouldn’t have been bothered. A couple of nights ago, I took our boy out for his nighttime whirl around the block. Some street lights were out and dimdog who was on an extending lead had a poo.
I didn’t have my phone or a torch so I had Togo back the next morning and collect his solids

RavensWig · 26/10/2021 16:19

Bloody hell, all those wankers that leave their dogshit in the middle of the footpath have got a lot to answer for. Hmm

It would make me roll my eyes a little but I've always got at least two in a pocket (or a whole roll attached to the big flexi lead when I use it) and I wouldn't object to showing them. I might do a mild cats bum face though.

My Husband has a head torch for this very thing .

This. It is a meaningless thing to do and pointlessly antagonistic.
I do think it was a little bit of a power trip for him.
I'd have laughed and said, 'Goodness, no, why on earth should I do that?' and carried on but I'm a bitch

tickledtiger · 26/10/2021 16:36

I actually think this is ok given how much of a disgusting problem dog crap is. I can see why you would feel affronted but… tough. It’s not personal.

It won’t stop people hanging the bags on bushes though, I wish there was a solution for that.

LoveFall · 26/10/2021 16:37

I use the green biodegradable bags that come in rolls. I have a little green cylinder a roll fits in and attaches by velcro the the leash handle part. I always have bags as they are attached.

chaosrabbitland · 26/10/2021 16:39

it sounds like he was polite and i think its fair enough , it wouldnt have bothered me to show him , dog crap everywhere is horrible and it could be that on this particular estate they have had problems with it ,
there are sadly plenty of people who would lie to him and just say oh yes of course i have them when they havent , so hes just doing his job

Also useful for:
  • putting disgusting slobbery balls or tug toys in to keep your pockets clean
  • separating treats in your pockets/treat bags
  • picking up mess left by picnickers or teenagers in the park
  • picking up smashed glass, left by the aforementioned menaces
  • cleaning up poo left by less responsible dog walkers (I always end up cleaning up at least two on one particular walk)
  • handing to other people who don’t have one with them

I stuff my dog walking bag full of them and replenish them when it gets to half full. (I buy eco/biodegradable bags in bulk, so always have plenty.)

TheChip · 26/10/2021 16:40

Since we need to have at least 2 bags on us when walking the dogs, I'd expect to be asked to show them if they ever stopped me to check. Otherwise saying we need 2 would be rather pointless as they'd never know.

I have been asked only once by the council and when I showed them they gave me like 50 free bags. I wish they'd be out and about more because dog shit seems to be increasing in my area.
I'd rather deal with people wanting to see how many bags I had than the amount of dog shit I see.

ErrolTheDragon · 26/10/2021 16:40

After many of those other uses, you can then reuse the bag for dogshit anyway. (My main alternative use for a clean dog bag is as a water bowl for him when we're out.).
Shehasadiamondinthesky · 26/10/2021 16:42

I don't think I'd be upset by that really.

stingofthebutterfly · 26/10/2021 16:47

Fair enough. Nothing wrong with wanting to keep the area clear. I don't see a problem with asking; he may have given you a couple of bags if you had none.

If you choose not to show him then that's your prerogative, but it's a bit dickish.

pilates · 26/10/2021 16:50

It wouldn’t bother me.

“Oh this kinda think annoys me tbh 🙈🙈

We went to take a selfie of myself and husband and his son at airport the other day (sending stepson home after not seeing him for 2 years (covid)) and the security man shouted at us white aggressively - no cameras allowed out it away !! Wtf I never knew this was a thing we weren’t even in the queue or anything - anyway it was 6am and I was tired and hadn’t had coffee yet so I actually shouted back - ok - you could try that again and say excuse me no cameras allowed out it away please - ffs
He wasn’t impressed

Can’t stand this kind of shit (hahahah)

Total power trip tbh”

What does white aggressively mean?

DampSquidGames · 26/10/2021 16:52

I need the warden to patrol outside my DM’s front garden hedge and catch the fuckers who are hanging dog shit bags on her hedge. My poor DM who has advanced Alzheimer’s and whoever is doing it makes me sick. She lives in a really posh village, think tweed coats and one or more of them is doing it.
