Labrador proof food bin

I have just found my 12 week old Labrador pup nosing open the pedal bin lid which contains his food. Sigh. He's been having an easy access buffet.
Please help me find a lab proof food bin so that he doesn't balloon! Any recommendations anyone?

No such thing. Your food bin needs to be behind at least one (preferably two) closed doors, or on a high shelf.

Sorry. Labradors are remarkably persistent food thieves.

I have this one and it stops my 14 year old professional bin diving labrador. He has knocked it over, chewed it, scratched it, and even pulled the black bin bag out piece by piece, but never managed to get to the rubbish!

I've never managed to find one in ten years. My lab has even figured out how to use pedal bins 🙄🙄 now he is getting older his attempts to raid the bin are a lot more half hearted and he just gives it a quick sniff and goes back to the couch.

Ooh I've found these- reckon they'd keep the twit out?

My daughter has the SimpleHuman bin for her remarkably determined cat and it's working well. I know other people with beagles who swear by them as well.

actiongirl1978 · 26/10/2021 08:58

They fit a full 25kg bag of dog food in.

Yep. Doors are your answer and even that is not guaranteed Grin

Nope.

I reckon he'd find them yummy tasty chew toys though.

Motorina · 26/10/2021 09:30

My beagles worked out how to ram raid a simply human bin. My kitchen bin is now in a precision fit wooden box which is bolted to the wall. That's stopped the little buggers so far.

The dog food is in plastic clip lid boxes on a shelf at shoulder height. I'm careful what I put on lower shelves so as not to create a ladder.

Beagles are shits.

Squeezed · 26/10/2021 09:30

To keep a Labrador out you probably need a safe with retina ID. My labradors were so stupid apart from when it came to finding food!

@actiongirl1978

I have the plastic feed store bins from amazon. They click shut and even I struggle to open them sometimes. Two labradors, neither can get in them.

We use the same one for our lab - it's great. I drop his bag bag of Guru in it, bag and all, as I think it probably keeps it that bit fresher.
icedcoffees · 26/10/2021 20:01

No such thing.

We put the bin in the cupboard and put child locks on the cupboard door, which works perfectly for our very greedy beagle Grin

aguaparachocolate · 29/10/2021 10:10

Ok I bought the one off Amazon and the little sod broke in on the second day 😡😡 I'm thinking doors and padlocks?

We have this one as well. The only time my dogs got into it was when one of the dc failed to lock it. (The lock is easy for people/children to manage, as it just slides forwards, but not for dogs.) The bin is also kept behind a locked door in a rear porch/lobby off the kitchen though, so that helps.

We had the Amazon feed bin a pp linked to for kibble, but that was kept in the cupboard under the stairs. Now we only have one, very elderly, dog so I have a rather nice tin and scoop on a high shelf that holds a 2.5 kg bag. It would never have stopped him in his younger days, but he can’t get up there now.
