Rough vs smooth collie

I grew up with rough collies and have a pretty good acquaintance with them, but no experience with smooth. I seem to be reading directly conflicting information about which variety needs less mental stimulation and exercise - and smooth collies do tend to be less common. Any insights? Or is the only real difference the coat length?

As far as I know the only real difference is cost length, some smooth breeders will add in a rough every so often as well.

I currently have a border and a rough. I've always had borders and this is my first rough. I love her but wouldn't have another. So highly strung and barks a lot!

That's interesting @Mantlemoose, I've always understood borders to be more highly strung and more in need of a working life and/or a high level of mental and physical stimulation. My beloved childhood rough wasn't a barker at all, although she was prone to the neurotic.

I can certainly believe that the difference is just the coat length.
