They are divine! But for fast dogs they’re damn slow at coming back, and for dogs with big ears they’re remarkably hard of hearing.

We went from labs to whippets and it’s a very big change, labs in particular are desperate to please and whippets are not but you cannot fault their loyalty and love. I spent 3 days in hospital earlier this summer and mine wouldn’t budge from my bed at home except for the necessities. I love her to bits!

@Girlwhowearsglasses

Aw they are so lovely. Mine is five now. He’s so lovely we all dote on him.

I bought a puppy pen and he took less than two weeks to jump over because of course whippet puppies are kangaroos!

NEVER use an expandable road with a whippet. Their acceleration is is so fast they will have reached escape velocity by the time the get to the end of the lead and you can be pulled over, break arms or get your fingers skinned to the bone. A short leash however will be fine; they are only small so they won’t pull you over from close quarters.

You need a webmaster harness. No other harness will stay on a whippet.

As soon as it’s vaccinated take it to the park and let it off. If you do it while they are still scared and want to come back to you you have a chance at recall. In the US they hardly let whippets off lead as they believe they won’t come back. Mine is fine.

If you have cats when your whippet is a puppy it will be fine. Don’t be afraid to let the cat swipe the puppy and claim Top Cat position.

If you don’t have a cat when whippets is a puppy it will want to chase and depending on the dog may not be safe. Ditto tiny dogs. Mine wouldn’t hurt a fly though.

They are ace. Don’t bark, you can pick them up, they fold up small and don’t moult much. They don’t smell either. What’s not to like?

Theu fold up small 😂 this thread has got me crying with laughter. I was considering getting one also. Slowly rethinking my decision!

We are nearly 2 weeks in ! The honeymoon period has worn off and I can see whippets were at some one point crossed with pixies.. hence the dainty cuteness and utter mayhem they cause.. she is the snuggliest, softest and most demanding puppy ever and yet a small tornado on badly coordinated legs ! She can jump vertically about 4' but has not yet combined this with horizontal movement or spacial awareness - she misjudges leaps on to the sofa by about a foot and can't work out why she hasnt landed on it... she mouths and chews everything except food which she has zero interest in.... I have done nothing productive in nearly 2 weeks, except built barricades ! However she now sleeps through and currently enjoys training for cuddles..

Please be careful with her jumping around, as this picture shows her bones have yet to lock in.

I am on the waiting list for a rescue whippet. After living with very clever and very naughty lakeland terriers for 20 years, I fancied something a little less challenging, and want a dog that can be tired out by a walk of less than 10 miles.

I'm wondering if I am making a very big mistake ...

I'm not sure how to stop her ? We are lifting her up and down stairs, on and off sofa and absolutely trying to discourage jumping up but this is while tearing round the room in high speed puppy zoomies 🤷‍♀️

I have learned 2 things from this thread:

  1. whippets are brilliant
  2. I am not ever getting a whippet
Netaporter · 07/11/2021 23:27

Pmsl @Colin56 post 😂

Didiplanthis · 10/11/2021 16:43

Oh good god... how do I protect her legs short of wrapping up in bubble wrap.. she is a lunatic !!!!! Handbrake turns at full gallop, launching up tiny steps from about 6' out..flipping over and landing on her head, vertical take offs just because 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️... how do they ever make it though puppyhood ????

You are so lucky.
Whippets are the best.
We will getting a puppy next May and I’m counting down the days.

Winterfairy23 · 10/11/2021 17:15

@Didiplanthis I think you adjust to the madness rather than them actually settling down 😂

Mine is nearly 6 months now and he acts like a flying squirrel on a daily basis.
