Poorly dog

11 yo Weim. Fine all day then started dry retching and shivering. Emergency trip to the vet to rule out bloat which she did, then possible diagnosis of kennel cough.

He's so poorly though. Just laying there like an empty wetsuit, I've given him some painkillers but I don't know what else to do.

Any ideas or experience?

I'm monitoring his breathing rate to help decide whether we call the vet again. Sad

Poor pooch , is it possible he has eaten something that he shouldn't of ?
Bad food / fox poo / dead animal / chicken bone / rat poison .

Can you check his temp , from google Normal body temperature for dogs and cats is 101.0 to 102.5°F (38.3 to 39.2°C). Some people and some pets maintain a baseline temperature a little above or below the average, but if your pet's temperature rises above 104°F (40.0°C) or falls below 99°F (37.2°C), take your pet to your veterinarian.
If you have not got a thermometer his paws /groin /armpits should only be slightly warmer than your hands ( on average of course )

Is he still drinking ? eating ? pee and poo ?

There's been a gastro virus going in our area (NW England), some dogs affected worse than others. Ours puked a couple of times and had some bloody diarrhoea and couple of days off food but fortunately we managed to keep him hydrated.
Hope yours recovers ASAP

This may sound ridiculous and may not be appropriate but Anytime I’ve a sick dog real chicken stock made from bones always really helped (even a few teaspoons of it)

Bearyhumcrack · 16/10/2021 21:28

He had a massive poo when we got back from the vets! Didn't eat his dinner but his temp when she checked it was 39.

He's stopped shivering now just looks so sad and unwell.

@AlCalavicci pretty sure he's not eaten anything he shouldn't have. He's never done it before and if it was tasty, his little sister would have got there before him!

Just a wee follow up on this. He went back to the vet 2 days later with fluid on his chest. Had a chest drain inserted with a diagnosis of pyothorax and sadly passed away this evening.

He'd never been ill. I just expected him to get old. But he got ill and died.

Rip my very best friend.

So sorry for your loss. What a shock for you. Did you say you also have his sister? How is she coping, how are you?

icedcoffees · 24/10/2021 08:30

Oh that is horrible - so sorry for your loss Thanks

Bearyhumcrack · 24/10/2021 15:37

She's another Weimaraner but not actually related. She's very out of sorts, looking for him everywhere. They were totally inseparable. Just heartbroken.

Went to chat to the vet this morning who is literally my favourite person in the world. She held him in her lap while he passed which gave me some solace as she's so so lovely.

There was nothing else we could have done for him.

Saucery · 24/10/2021 16:08

I’m so sorry. I had a similar experience with “expecting them to get old” and it is so painful Flowers.
