Neighbours dog barking for the WHOLE day!

Driving me crazy, the NDN are old and have an even older dog. I kid you not it barks ALL day long and sometimes even through the night. I am trying to work from home and find it almost impossible to concentrate. What can I do?!!! We haven't been here very long so really don't want to fall out with anyone.

There's absolutely nothing you can do directly.

The only options you have are to

• speak to the owners and see if there's anything they can do (with an old dog, if it hasn't always been this way, I'd suspect canine cognitive dysfunction aka doggy dementia). I'd suggest a vet check on the grounds that the dog seems distressed.
• speak to the council from a noise nuisance point of view - but this is so long winded that the elderly dog will probably have popped its clogs by the time anything is done.

If it's an old dog I suspect the barking is due to dementia - sadly, although there's medication available to help, there's no cure for it and many dogs who bark constantly do so because they're confused and scared.

Re. the noise the only thing to do is to report it to the councils' noise team - someone will come around and listen to the noise from your viewpoint and decide whether it's worthy of follow-up.
