Can I call my (as yet theoretical) dog Stiffy?

My dog is named after a character from Jeeves and Wooster.

We are planning to get a border terrier bitch pup next year. I very much like the idea of calling her Stiffy Byng (another J&W character) which would inevitably end up Stiffy for short.

What would you think if you met a dog called Stiffy?

A. This dog’s name is Erection.
B. Oh, like Stiffy Byng?
C. Nothing much.
D. Something else.

A. I'd have a good laugh at the dog park about it.

tilder · 14/10/2021 19:43

A

But am not sure you're expecting anything else really...

CoachBeard · 14/10/2021 19:43

Sorry, you can only call her Stiffy if she’s a Staffy! 🤣

Butterflyfern · 14/10/2021 19:43

Well it's you that will have to shout for it in the park...

And I would think A. But I know nothing about Jeeves and Wooster.

CoachBeard · 14/10/2021 19:43

Oh and A!

LavenderYellow · 14/10/2021 19:44

I would laugh! With you, not at you.
Are you aware that vets often call out pet's name with your surname?
Ie 'Stiffy Jumperandjacket' (as they gleefully rub their hands together at the prospect of all your lovely money ‐oops, I digress, got stung for a £200 vet bill only this morning!)

TheOnlyMrsM · 14/10/2021 19:45

No, you may not. How rude! It could give him a complex.

Moltenpink · 14/10/2021 19:45

A Smile

JumperandJacket · 14/10/2021 19:46

@tilder

A

This is what DH says. I’ve been trying to argue that no one says stiffy these days and so it’s fine…

A

TheOnlyMrsM · 14/10/2021 19:46

Her?! That makes it worse.

HipposHaveNipples · 14/10/2021 19:48

A, definitely. I'm in my 20s, people definitely still say stiffy - in fact I've never heard of the character you're talking about so wouldn't make that association.

Hercisback · 14/10/2021 19:49

A

People do say stiffy.

MerryMarigold · 14/10/2021 19:50

Another A here. And you'd better hope she has amazing recall to come at the first shout of "STIFFY!" (And that you don't get reported to the police if you're in an area full of children).

BrickingIt44 · 14/10/2021 19:51

Absolutely A and I'm a bog J&W fan. What about Madeline?

Greenmarmalade · 14/10/2021 19:52

A

TheOnlyMrsM · 14/10/2021 19:54

I'd like to suggest Woofster.

JumperandJacket · 14/10/2021 19:55

Oh dear Grin - back to the drawing board.

I think Madeline is too wet for a terrier. Maybe Bobbie Wickham?

@TheOnlyMrsM Ha ha

OP posts:
ohtwatbollocks · 14/10/2021 19:55

Definitely A!

Merlotthegreat · 14/10/2021 19:56

A 🤣🤣

Greenmarmalade · 14/10/2021 19:58

@TheOnlyMrsM Woofster!! Perfect

RandomDent · 14/10/2021 19:58

Madeleine is indeed too wet. How about Aunt Agatha?

GlacindaTheTroll · 14/10/2021 19:58

A - but do recognise the character so would believe you meant B.

But were being hopelessly naive

Madeleine only for a Bassett

How about Flossie (Florence) because she's Craye, Craye?

Honoria?

One of the fearsome aunts (especially if you know you're going to be a multi-dog family): Agatha, Dahlia

Bob (Roberta Wickham when she's been naughty)

Or Ooofy or Bingo, which I think would work on either sex

TerrifiedandWorried · 14/10/2021 19:59

Stiffy Byng but shorten to Byng?
