Sock muncher - advice please!!

musketeersmama · 12/10/2021 13:05

My two year old working Cocker Spaniel loves eating everything she shouldn’t especially socks, reusable cotton pads, pants etc
She normally throws them up a day or two later however this time she is honking like a goose and wretching but to no avail. She is bothered by the obstruction but still waggy tailed, bright & eating normally.
Do I go to the vet or wait it out or make her sick? Advice please!!

Vet.

Mine ate a rag unbeknown to us. It got stuck in the intestine and we were very lucky that it only caused bruising of the tissue when they performed emergency surgery to remove it.

I would be trying to avoid any sock/other eating in the future as a blockage is serious.

BrilloPaddy · 12/10/2021 13:18

A friend's cockapoo ate a sock and nearly died as she delayed treatment hoping it would appear..............

She now has a strict sock removal ban downstairs and a gate to stop the dog getting upstairs to find them!

musketeersmama · 12/10/2021 13:27

Fuck.
We’re usually very careful with socks & tbh I’m not totally certain that it is a sock that’s caused this. I’ll ring the vet now.
Thanks guys

Good luck OP.

Wolfiefan · 12/10/2021 13:31

Just a thought. Definitely eaten something? Eg obstructed. No bowel movements.
Or is it a cough? Throat issue?

tizwozliz · 12/10/2021 13:38

Could be kennel cough - honking followed by wretching are classic symptoms

musketeersmama · 12/10/2021 13:39

@Wolfiefan I’m honestly not sure - I’m assuming she’s eaten something because she has form. She is honking and hacking, is bringing up saliva & has eaten some grass so my gut feeling is an obstruction of some sort. Her mum is such an easy dog but she is a real character (bloody nightmare 😬🥰)

@tizwozliz really? That’s interesting cos they’ve not had a Kennel cough vaccine for over a year (coz covid). Can they get it from other dogs in the park?

Good luck at the vets. Mine is similar and we are so vigilant not to leave anything accessible to them. As I’m sure you are too. But accidents happen!

Wolfiefan · 12/10/2021 13:43

They can pick up kennel cough from other dogs. It’s horribly contagious. The vaccine also doesn’t prevent it totally. It protects against certain strands.
I only mention it as you can’t go into the vets with a dog that may have this without warning them.

musketeersmama · 12/10/2021 13:53

Brilliant advice, much appreciated. Vets are on lunch so I’ll ring after 2pm. Honestly flipping dogs & kids - who’d have ‘em?? 😆

Fingers crossed 🤞

Dandelionflower · 12/10/2021 17:35

The word honking makes me think kennel cough too, and bringing up what looks like saliva. My lab has had it twice despite being vaccinated, first time was mild, second he needed anti inflammatories and antibiotics.

Yesterday he managed to eat a food waste bag and it's contents. He's never done anything like this before. We are on a watch and wait under the vets advice. There was nothing poisonous in the bag, just some bread and banana peel somthe vet wasn't too concerned due to type of bag. I had no sleep last night as I was on the sofa making sure he was ok and might be doing the same tonight. Wouldn't change home though, hope yours is ok.

icedcoffees · 12/10/2021 18:01

Any update OP? I hope she's okay!

BrilloPaddy · 12/10/2021 19:24

Our neighbours dog has obviously got kennel cough - I've been terrified to let mine out in the garden the last few days!

Hope your little muncher is OK.

MrMrsJones · 12/10/2021 19:31

Good luck

musketeersmama · 13/10/2021 10:41

Morning! Sorry for the late update - you vipers called it & the vet reckons it’s kennel cough! She’s been prescribed antibiotics because of her elevated temp but the vet says it’s relatively mild & I can give her some baby cough syrup to soothe her pipes. Just hope her mum doesn’t get it too. Apparently there’s a lot of it going round at the moment so I’m going to keep her home & try not to spread it further!

Thanks again for all the advice & well wishes to the muncher - she’s curled up on my lap gloating that she’s getting all the attention 😂

Thanks for asking, small bits of bag came out yesterday, and this mornings pick up was interesting! It was all held together by the bag, almost already bagged ConfusedGrin

Hope your girl makes a speedy recovery!

musketeersmama · 13/10/2021 12:35

@Dandelionflower pre bagged poop 😂 😂

Bless her. Honey helps too.

BrilloPaddy · 13/10/2021 15:00

Oh mine was really sorry for himself when he had it. He also loved honey off a spoon Grin

They soon bounce back and normal service will be resumed.......
