Kennel cough

My 1.5 year old dog was in contact with a dog yesterday that today I have been told has developed kennel cough. Both dogs are vaccinated. They played with one another a fair bit yesterday outside, about half an hour on and off. what do you think the chances of my pooch getting kennel cough now? What should I do in terms of contact with other dogs now as my dog has no symptoms.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Sadly the chances are pretty high - kennel cough is very easily transmitted.

You have no obligation to isolate your dog unless they have symptoms but if they attend daycare or a walker then you need to tell them and probably keep them off for a good couple of weeks or it will spread like wildfire.

If your dog is vaccinated is there not a good chance they won't get it? My dog is vaccinated for kennel cough and I would hope that that would protect him from getting it.

Not really.

It's like the flu vaccine in humans - the vaccine protects again one strain but there are loads of strains about.

I walk dogs for a living and all my dogs are vaccinated but one had kennel cough a few weeks ago and was quite poorly with it.

Our vaccinated dog has just recovered from kennel cough, vet says they have seen a lot of it in our local area in the last couple of months even in vaccinated dogs. He goes out with dog walkers so chances are he's caught it from one of their charges. First day back out with walkers today after two weeks off.
