Anyone else won the dog lottery with their dog?

I feel like I’ve been really lucky with my dog when I read this forum. I know people with issues are more likely to write about them than people who happily coexist with their dogs, but there must be more people who have a really easy dog?

I’ve got a 2, neatly 3 year old Vizsla, supposedly a high energy, needy breed.
She has a one hour walk a day, but can miss a day if the weather is terrible/I’m ill. Equally can go for 20 miles if you want. She walks on the lead nicely, comes back when you ask, is good with other dogs.
Fireworks/thunder/gunshots don’t bother her, she doesn’t really get up by choice until 10.30am so we get a lie-in whenever we want. We can leave her alone whenever we like, she just sleeps. She doesn’t touch anything in the house she shouldn’t.
We can take her to other peoples houses and she just lies on her blanket.

I’ve had dogs before her so I realise I’ve won the dog lottery. Just wondering if anyone else has a really easy dog?

Yes me. I have the best dog in the world. His worst habit is stealing socks but otherwise he's perfect. He's a collie x,apparently collies aren't easy but he's an absolute dream. Very obedient, not food motivated, good with kids and other dogs, excellent recall.
Thanks for letting me be smug about my dog Grin

WeddingBella · 06/10/2021 21:50

Sorry to burst your bubbles but the best dog ever belongs to me Grin

Realistically, I feel v v lucky to have him. He was ddog3 when we got him (unfortunately he's now an only). DDog1 was brilliant 85% of the time but there was no stopping him from yapping (JRT cross), DDog2 was just a bloody nightmare. I loved her but her drive to hunt never ever slowed down and she became reactive as she got older (border terrier).

Ddog3, JRT, has just always been relaxed. Great with people, kids, cats, dogs, lovely to walk both on and off lead, bomb proof recall, affectionate without being demanding and he's adorable too.
He's old now and has had a very tough 18 months (went almost blind overnight on top of other health issues) but he carries on, happy as always. He's amazing.

CointreauVersial · 06/10/2021 21:59

My DM won the dog lottery with her Greek rescue dog. He's middle-aged (perfect for a 75yo), calm, polite, gets on with all other dogs, doesn't bark, chew, or jump all over visitors - the perfect gentleman. He also copes well with DM's five mile a day walking habit.

His only bad habits are he's a bit fussy, and he buries his toys in the garden.

But she absolutely adores him, and he was a godsend after DSDad died last year. I honestly think she would have fallen apart if she hadn't managed to adopt him.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 06/10/2021 22:57

I often think this with my dog, he's such a cuddly but independent little chap. Great with people and kids, really clever and easy to train. Like yours op he would walk for miles or be happy with a potter around the block.

He's not a morning dog and doesn't really want to do anything much until after lunch.

We've had a little bit of reactivity towards some male dogs when he's on lead but now we've worked out how to manage that it's not a problem.

He's fiercely loyal to the people he considers to be in his pack.

I think he's perfect.

I suspect and awful lot of people look at their dogs and feel they've won the lottery with them tbh.

My dog knows she's the best dog in the world, probably because I keep telling her that she is.

She has such a sweet personality, and seems to be able charm everyone she meets - beautiful on the inside as well as the outside, something else I'm always telling her.

She's funny and playful and really easy going, and she makes me smile every day.

We were at the vet today for routine things and she just let the vet get on with what needed to be done and walked out with her tail wagging; admittedly she did need me to hold her close for some of the things.

We've been together for 10 years and she's just been an absolute joy.

She was such an easy puppy, no chewing, housetrained very quickly, just so easy.

The only behaviour problem I ever had with her was when she was a teenager and she went through her 'not wanting to get back on the lead' stage, but even that is something I laugh about now as she was just so cheeky at the time.

I'd be afraid to get another dog because I suspect I've been very lucky with her and another one might not be as easy.

I've just posted on another thread about this!! We have a pug boy and he is THEE best dog in the world!

Our pug has never once attempted to chew any furniture and we have never crated him; he can be left alone no problem and just sleeps the whole time (I have cameras); he is very lazy in the mornings and is not an early riser at all, will happily snooze until 11am or even midday; he is extremely child/stranger-friendly; he loves nothing more than to cuddle up on top of you; he was very easy to potty train and is generally always eager to please (and to get treats) so is very trainable; he just sleeps on car rides and we have taken him on very long car-holidays; he is happy to walk for hours or 15 minutes depending on the weather/your time; he has great recall even though he's a teenager and he is the most loyal, loving companion anyone could ever wish for. Oh, and we also have s pony and he is extremely friendly with horses as well. He is my baby Blush

Me!! Ddog is an absolute joy.
Great on and off the lead, playful, happy, absolutely not a morning dog, confident but not cocky, doesn't have "small dog syndrome", loves people & kids, is very snuggly, really easy to train and of course he's super cute.

I'm very proud of the work I've put into him to make him such a so well rounded but also really lucky that he's such a dream.

He does bark for attention and when he wants to play, which can be annoying but I'm trying to teach him to speak so I can then teach him to stop.

I appreciate and enjoy every single minute with him.

I'm totally in love.

Sweetleftfood · 07/10/2021 10:57

I think it's really nice to have a thread like this in the doghouse as as you say there are so many posts about dog problems.

My one has his issues, for instance he doesn't like certain breeds (easily managed as he has great recall) , is very likely to scavenge off the floor (bloody chicken bones....) and barks at the postman/binmen. But of course he is the bestest, cuddliest, cutest most excellent dog ever Smile

Florence282 · 07/10/2021 11:17

I'm so jealous! Our boy is lovely and has many good traits but a lot of difficulties too.

kennelmaid · 07/10/2021 11:28

We have a Greek rescue and he's lovely. He's very good-natured and happy, despite having had tough times in his past. We couldn't have picked a better dog. We have been very lucky with all our dogs and we feel like we've won the doggy lottery many times over.

Sounds like my rescue - although she doesn't like fireworks. Loves my 2 rescue cats too, they all curl up together on my bed leaving me more room!
Pumpkin5piced · 07/10/2021 19:03

@StrawberryFizz26 what breed?

Ughmaybenot · 07/10/2021 19:08

Yep. He’s an actual angel, I regularly just look at him and come over all squishy because I love him so much. He’s a cockapoo but is soooo chill. He’ll walk for hours or ten minutes and either way he’s not bothered, and doesn’t want to go out in the rain. Hes not scared of fireworks, he’s good around my horses, he doesn’t chase livestock, he is happy to be left at home when necessary. He doesn’t have a ‘wake up’ time and honestly would happily stay in bed until gone 10am given a chance and loves an early night because he loves bed. He’s cuddly and happy and just generally a joy to have around.

He does shout abuse at other dogs on walks tho, little rascal.

goodwinter · 07/10/2021 19:10

Sort of ;)

My boy can't be let off lead or be anywhere near cats. He also has a really sensitive stomach and is prone to pancreatitis. He doesn't always do what he's told either!

However.... He is incredibly chill, happy to potter along for walks whenever, eats whenever, always happy to see people and cuddle them (including young kids) but never goes crazy or jumps at them. He doesn't bark unless he's told to. He's polite but unbothered about other dogs. Will happily be left alone for up to 4 hours. He's never chewed anything or been destructive.

He was a rescue, used for badger baiting and originally found with horrendous injuries, so especially considering his past he's an absolute diamond ❤️

Best boy in the world evs. Look at him, rocking that jumper. God I miss him. I popped up to his grave this afternoon to remind him that he was a Very Good Dog indeed.

However I now have the best pup in the world who has definite best dog potential, once he’s finished being an arsehole (as all puppies are). So I’m pretty lucky.

Ours is fantastic. He's a JRT, almost 2. He's so loving and friendly. Brilliant with other dogs and kids. Good recall. Lazy as heck so will just sleep in or sleep when we are out. Never chews or steals anything. He's so easy.

HoneyDragon · 07/10/2021 19:17

My dogs a dick. I’ve had a decade of her being a dick. She’s such a dick that the dog trainer cried happy tears when she finally got her Bronze certificate. But she tries to be a good dog. And she’s my dog, so is still the best dog.

And much like the lottery some of us have to lose so a lucky few can win but we were ok taking the bet Wink

StCharlotte · 07/10/2021 19:21

We had a rescue Labrador from Ireland. He was emaciated when we got him and had been tethered judging by the ridge around his neck but he had no issues or bad behaviours (apart from thieving food of course!) and we had 12 very happy years together. He was probably about 14 when he died and has spoiled me for other dogs. DH would have another but I can't imagine another one could match up.

harriethoyle · 07/10/2021 19:22

Yes! My current rescue twinsies are a dream - such dear, easy, loving little girls - and were preceded by two rescue boys I got 4 years apart and who were thick as thieves and a joy to knows. I've hit the jackpot four times now!

Attached photo is current puppers - you wouldn't think they were 12 would you? ❤

My big dog (same as HoneyDragon’s) is also a dick. He’s horrendous on the lead, hates most other dogs, and is really needy with me. God I love him though. He’s my shadow and my very best boy.

My little dog is a dick in different ways, she’s a terrible yapper and fussy with food. But she very sweet natured and would happily spend all day on my lap.

So I won the lottery too, but maybe more like five numbers and the bonus ball. Grin

ladygindiva · 07/10/2021 19:26

You're all wrong. I have the best dog. He's a rescue jrt x chihuahua, really small, up for walks but equally happy to chill on the sofa, absolutely cute, and dealt amazingly well with my meeting dp and having twins who are now 4. I have never worried about him with my kids, he adores them but slinks off to lie on someone's bed when they are being too loud. When I feel down he comes and sits by me extra close. He's my wing man. He had his 11th birthday the other day ( estimated as don't know) and the thought of him not being around makes me cry.

LadyLothbrook · 07/10/2021 19:27

Viz mum here too. The goodest of good boys. We don't deserve dogs. Honestly.

ladygindiva · 07/10/2021 19:33

I just have to add another reason my dog is the best... If I forget to leave the landing light on for my girls ( they like it on, one freaks out if she wakes in the night to pure darkness) he SITS IN THE LANDING STARING AT THE SWITCH. I kid you not, he's bloody amazing.

I have the same breed! She's just the cutest, literally no bother. Loves a walk but hates the rain so I never have to go out when it rains - bonus! Loves everyone and is adored by all my friends/family. Even my dog hating friend described her as 'peak dog and the only dog she's ever liked. I too can't imagine life without her!

I thought this was going to be about some amazing lottery open only to dogs, what a disappointment..
