Anyone else won the dog lottery with their dog?

I feel like I’ve been really lucky with my dog when I read this forum. I know people with issues are more likely to write about them than people who happily coexist with their dogs, but there must be more people who have a really easy dog?

I’ve got a 2, neatly 3 year old Vizsla, supposedly a high energy, needy breed.
She has a one hour walk a day, but can miss a day if the weather is terrible/I’m ill. Equally can go for 20 miles if you want. She walks on the lead nicely, comes back when you ask, is good with other dogs.
Fireworks/thunder/gunshots don’t bother her, she doesn’t really get up by choice until 10.30am so we get a lie-in whenever we want. We can leave her alone whenever we like, she just sleeps. She doesn’t touch anything in the house she shouldn’t.
We can take her to other peoples houses and she just lies on her blanket.

I’ve had dogs before her so I realise I’ve won the dog lottery. Just wondering if anyone else has a really easy dog?

Yes brittle my jackahuahua hates the rain too: if I try to walk him on a rainy day he digs his heels in and won't step out the front door! He has been known to hide in people's beds on rainy days I'm sure incase anyone wants to take him out 😂

ladygindiva · 07/10/2021 19:37

@Somuddled

I thought this was going to be about some amazing lottery open only to dogs, what a disappointment..
🤣🤣🤣🤣

@bollocksthemess it’s because your ddog is Hungarian. We’re usually well behaved Grin

bollocksthemess · 07/10/2021 20:12

@Longdistance we’ve met so many people from Hungary on our walks, they always stop us when they see her! They’ve always been well behaved too 😂

😂 I talk to Hungarian dogs in Hungarian, in case they understand…

I've got another winner. He's a standard dachshund, we got him when he was 10 months old after our previous one suddenly died. Like others mentioned, he's always had the sense not to start a walk in the rain (though continued happily enough if we were already out), didn't need a daily walk but could climb mountains or walk a 20km (not miles, but that's plenty far enough!Grin).

He's 15 and a half now, so doesn't do long walks any more but he's doing fine. Deaf as a post so he really can't hear us rather than pretending.

My girl is lovely. She has the sweetest nature, just adores people and other dogs. She's always had excellent recall and is great on the lead, can be left at home, is great in the car, easy to feed and is just full of joy and affection. She'll walk miles at my heel or is content with a short on lead sniffy walk

She loves too hard and jumps up getting excited by visitors and struggles to settle in public places but we still love her and thank our lucky stars that we rescued the little nutter! She's given so much love and joy to us, I can't imagine a day now without my favourite part, walking through field and woods with her.

Twilight7777 · 07/10/2021 23:14

I’ve got the best dog, she’s a toy poodle, but it was because I socialised her very early on, when I got her at 8 weeks I got a back pack thing that the dog could sit in securely and walked her round the neighbourhood, went to pubs, etc a couple of shops allowed her, and she very quickly got used to all the sights and sounds, and as a result, not much scares her, she’s happy going in the car, fireworks don’t bother her, can take her to pubs and she’ll happily lie down and go to sleep or accept any fussing. She is happy with a half hour walk a day, and if the weathers really bad can go without for one day. She’s so happy and friendly most people who meet her think she is a puppy, but she’s 7 in November! Her only ‘flaw’ if you like is that occasionally if a dog gets too pushy and won’t back off she will snap, she’s never bit a dog and only has 4 teeth so she can’t do any damage, (toy poodle and it’s because she doesn’t drink enough water, vets are aware and isn’t much they can do other than offer cleaning under sedation and teeth removal when needed, they are brushed regularly but her poor teeth just don’t seem to do very well). Ruby has been on holidays with us, travelling up to 4 hours in a car (with regular breaks) stayed in caravans, houses and b & bs. Because I am profoundly deaf which ruby knew straight from the start she rarely barks, and only in playing, or if she hears a noise she’s not familiar with. She lets me know she wants to go out or wants food by pawing my leg or arm and then I’ll say ‘show me’ and she’ll let me know what she wants. She isn’t a trained dog for the deaf she is self taught almost. The pandemic was very difficult because she couldn’t understand why strangers didn’t want to talk to her or fuss her, so during the pandemic she got frustrated and would run up to random people and dogs for some attention which made a lot of people smile! At home she’s well known round my cul de sac for going up to people for a fuss which makes a lot of people smile especially children that are playing.. She’s a dream dog and is very gentle with my 15 month old niece. She can get jealous with my niece but what we do is give her plenty of attention and when we feed my niece we give my dog a small amount of whatever my niece is eating (only vegetables or meat) and she will happily sit next to my niece and ‘watch her’. In fact I’m sure my dog thinks she’s the baby sitter and we sit there and do nothing 😆 I’ve rambled on a bit, sorry!

Ours is wonderful. Adopted him from a rescue aged 8 and he is just the most friendly easygoing chap ever. Great with other dogs, loves kids, loves visitors, loves a walk but happy to just play in the house if it's raining. He's a real comedian, has a huge collection of teddies that he carries round really gently, and if anyone is upset he will climb onto their lap, look them dead in the eye as if imparting great wisdom and say 'Owls' so clearly and so solemnly that it's impossible not to laugh.

Twilight7777 · 07/10/2021 23:17

Just remembered to add that despite being a poodle she is a very lazy dog and sometimes has to be bribed to get out the bed in the morning! She also stands at the door when she wants to go to bed and does a groaning noise if I don’t go when she wants to, sometimes she’ll take herself to bed and then have the cheek to give me the side eye when I come to bed and switch the bedside light on 😆

Happyface120 · 07/10/2021 23:23

You're all wrong Grin
My girl is the best. Homebred labrador who I had no intention of keeping. She is 6 now, was easy to toilet train, can be left in the house where she sleeps all day, but equally loves a full day walk. Lovely with every dog she meets on and off lead. Amazing with the DC, tolerates the cats and hens, doesn't even steal food.
I love her so much ❤️

Helenluvsrob · 07/10/2021 23:37

Meee!!

I have the loveliest CKCS. He is so good at his main job as a lap dog to keep my stress levels bearable . He just wants to be with his people - preferably me 🤣. But he’s also a grand dog to walk - 9kn today for me and plenty more off lead for him.

tgifginplease · 08/10/2021 07:19

Your dogs all sound brilliant! We had the best and easiest dog but unfortunately lost him recently. We realised very early on though that we'd won the dog lottery as we could take him anywhere, he would never beg for food, and he was a gentle giant.

QuentinBunbury · 08/10/2021 08:11

twilight She sounds amazing

hapagirl · 08/10/2021 08:24

Awww. Lovely to read these 😊 but I have the best dog. She’s a Border Terrier and even people who don’t like dogs love her. The postmen around here says she’s the best dog and my best friend who really wants a dog has decided not to in case it’s not as nice as ours 😂.
I feel really lucky though. We had a rescue previously and she was reactive to other dogs so could only walk her at quiet times and places. It’s lovely to have a dog who is so friendly. Her main problem is she takes ages to do her business on walks.

Borderterrierpuppy · 08/10/2021 08:39

Oh we have the best dog in the world actually:))
She is a 4 yr old cockapoo loves all people and other dogs. Happy to run all day or just chill. She is definitely an undercover mental health promotion worker, has got us through lockdown stress and a family health emergency. Sweet loving funny dependable enthusiastic soft warm and loves cuddles. She is just perfect. We couldn’t love her any more than we do :)))

tinselvestsparklepants · 08/10/2021 08:45

As first time dog owners I think we definitely win the lottery with our adopted girl. She is calm and polite with others but bounces like a loon when she's off lead and chasing sticks. She is very well behaved in the house, only barks at reversing vans (so less than once a day) lets us sleep in, asks before getting into the sofa and most importantly seems to enjoy a cuddle! I can't believe how lucky we are. We both adore her. Smile

shallIswim · 08/10/2021 08:50

Get to the back of the queue all of you. My former dog was BDITW, and my present dog is snapping at his Angel heels.
Both retriever types so completely ruled by their stomachs. But that's ok because I understand that!
Seriously tho they both had/have their faults. But I tend to blame us humans for them. First dog's recall was shaky. But we learned and present dog is perfect. If I was to train second dog again I'd use more squeaky toys rather than just food because I think we've kind of made the food mi after that he is!

So funny! My girl just sort of freezes and gives me a pleading look when I try to walk her in the rain. She trots up to bed with me every night and sits by her bed while I arrange her blanket ready to tuck her in - definitely helps me deal with my increasingly empty nest!
OhDear2200 · 09/10/2021 09:16

No no no, sorry to break it to you but you’re all wrong!!!

My lurcher is the lottery win. Adopted him when he was 4ish, a stray in Ireland but must have been trained at some point.

He’s brilliant on the lead, seriously I’ve never known a dog like it. If there is the tiniest bit of tension on the lead he slows and looks at me. His recall (for a lurcher) is fabulous, will come stand at my feet, he does not bark, he’s clean on the house and he sleeps 90% of the time. Loves other dogs.

Yes he’s not cat or anything small friendly, so has to be on the lead when around houses. However when it’s safe he’s als brilliant off lead.

He’s getting on now and I’m worried that I won’t ever be able to get another dog as what if it’s a dick. We’ve been spoilt! Especially as he’s the first dog we’ve ever owned.

OhDear2200 · 09/10/2021 09:19

Sorry for the sake of balance. He does pinch food if left on the side. He particularly likes cake. But he always looks really really sorry afterwards.
