The foghorn is sounding frequently and I suspect that's why I'm up enjoying the ambience of a foggy garden at 4am.

Hoping @BaconandAvocado is fast asleep and all the others with wide awake pups.

We did a 6 week puppy class which was just ok. Just didn't click with the trainer. It was useful from the perspective of doing things in an environment with more distractions but not a lot learnt that you couldn't teach yourself. No socialisation but range of breeds and ages meant this wouldn't have worked well anyway.

The follow on class was past Ada's bedtime so we've gone elsewhere for the next stage. These are much better, outside in a secure paddock, so can do some exercises dropping the lead if we dare, and we have 10 mins play at the end. Trainer is much more receptive to answering specific questions. Proofing with other dogs around is what we really need to work on and that's what these classes provide. Most of what we do is easily performed in the garden but Ada has very selective hearing if there are other things going on - other dogs, people, birds flying, insects, leaves falling etc.

Aria20 · 05/10/2021 17:12

I found the 6 week "puppy school" was crap. It was all stuff I'd already taught eg sit and down. We then switched to the kennel club good citizen award scheme. We have completed 6 weeks bronze and found it much better and worthwhile. We are now half way through 6 weeks silver and will eventually go on to gold. It's mostly stuff you can teach at home but it's useful practicing it around other dogs. Also I'm hoping to eventually train pup to be a therapy/support dog to come with me to work in schools so I need her to have solid training!

GuyFawkesDay · 05/10/2021 17:50

@Aria20 that's what I want to do with FawkesPup. Vet reckons he's a good candidate because he's confident and sociable.

MrsHerculePoirot · 05/10/2021 18:03

@BaconAndAvocado I’d also get a second opinion from your vet re weight. PoirotPup was 12.5 at about that age…. It would’ve worth checking to rule out any concerns. What age and weight was he when you got him? They should grow at roughly 1 kg per week I think at that age as a rule of thumb.

Aria20 · 05/10/2021 18:41

@GuyFawkesDay I hope I can train her well enough!! She is also confident and sociable and very used to being around children of varying ages as mine are 3, 10 & 13 and we often have kids from the neighbourhood round after school. At the moment it's just the recall (lack of) and suddenly she's started jumping up which she didn't used to do so am trying to stop that!

LadyCatStark · 05/10/2021 19:38

Anyone else’s puppy figured out how to turn the TV on? 😂 he hasn’t mastered changing the channel though (yet)!

LadyCatStark · 05/10/2021 19:39

@Aria20 I’d love for Billy to be a therapy dog with me but I’m just imagining my manager’s reaction and the risk assessments 😂

Goawayangryman · 05/10/2021 20:06

Hah. That's quite clever about the TV.

I'm down to do the KC good citizen thing with ours in January ,(the earliest available in my area but she will be practically teenage then so...). I suspect the classes are going to be not great and I now regret spaffing £140 on them as money is a bit tight... Thinking I might try and get a refund and wait for the proper classes...

Goawayangryman · 05/10/2021 20:07

I mean, the 6 week puppy class not being terribly useful.

tizwozliz · 05/10/2021 20:14

£140 sounds super expensive, ours were less than half that

MsAwesomeDragon · 05/10/2021 20:22

You lot do talk a lot!!! So much to catch up on.

AwesomePup goes to daycare one day a week at the minute. Mostly for socialising purposes, so he's having a chance to meet and play with other dogs, as dd1 is mostly at home with him but isn't confident to take him out anywhere he might not come back quickly (fair enough tbh). He absolutely adores daycare, and comes home properly tired out. It's quite a new place and although they've got a licence for up to 30 dogs there's never been more than 15 when he's been, and quite a lot of them are puppies. I get sent photos of him playing with the other puppies who are a similar age/size as him, while smaller/younger puppies are in a different area, and adult dogs who aren't interested in playing with puppies are in another area again. I would thoroughly recommend this daycare to anyone, but I have friends who have had a very different experience at other places (2 of which have shut down during covid).

Kongs are a huge hit here, but when we first introduced them we did need to make it really, really easy. We started with kibble and treats that just fell out when he rolled out around. Next stage was mostly dry kibble/treats/chopped veg sealed up with peanut butter or cheese (he really likes goats cheese and that's apparently kinder on sensitive tummies). Now he gets tuna and cheese/meat paste/baby food often with bits of frozen veg mixed in, then frozen. He knows what to expect and he settles down for a good half hour of licking the good stuff out of the middle.

We did a 6 week puppy school. It was ok. We'd done a lot of it at home anyway, but it was good to practice around other dogs. There were 3 other puppies around the same age and size as AwesomePup, so they were good playmates for each other (not that they were supposed to be playing, but they did love each other). I would try an intermediate class but there don't seem to be any around here. There's lots of "adolescent training classes" but it's just the same stuff we did at the puppy class but with older pups. I'd like one with a bit more progression but I can't find one. So I'll just keep taking him out and about, practising our basic commands in different places with different levels of distraction. He is now getting good at waiting for me when he sees another dog, but I am very aware that adolescent twatiness will hit very soon now as he's 6 months. I'm enjoying this brief interlude where he's old enough to have relatively decent recall and young enough to still quite like hanging out with me more than other dogs.

cheeseisthebest · 05/10/2021 20:35

I just stick a bit of primula in his Kong. But like the other ideas to make it last a bit longer.
He hasn't been nipping at all this evening, instead he's been eating loo roll and watching bake off.
#Livinghisbestlife as my teenage DD just said!

MsAwesomeDragon · 05/10/2021 20:46

I took mine out for a decent walk before it got dark, so he's been lovely this evening. He's curled up beside me on the sofa snoring. He's a very vocal chap, although he's not really a barker he just makes appreciative noises when eating or chewing, then snores quite loudly when he's soundly asleep.

tizwozliz · 05/10/2021 20:47

You lot do talk a lot!!

I'll be quieter next week, going back to work after 3 months off

cheeseisthebest · 05/10/2021 20:54

We had a good sniffy walk too about 4.30 then did some training then he took himself to his crate for a sleep. Been so much calmer.

MsAwesomeDragon · 05/10/2021 20:55

Is that a good thing? I hope you haven't been ill for 3 months.
tizwozliz · 05/10/2021 21:05

No, I'm a contractor so took a 3 month break between contracts for an extended puppy settling in period. Pup is well and truly settled in, warming my legs nicely on the sofa. Must admit, didn't expect her still to be waking in the night at this stage - grrrr. I'm keeping my fingers crossed it might be teething related as she was better a few weeks back but has regressed.

GuyFawkesDay · 05/10/2021 21:26

FawkesPup and I have had a nice sniffy walk this afternoon too in the sunshine. He's curled up next to me on the sofa too.

Been a grotty little oik this afternoon, he properly barked at me and air snapped. He was playing as he was play bowing etc but I was having none of it, grabbed him by the scruff and put him in the pen without talking to him and walked away. Was fine 2 minutes later. Argh!

cheeseisthebest · 05/10/2021 21:33

I do wish our pup would snuggle on the sofa. He will for a few minutes then jumps off to sleep on his own.

Goawayangryman · 05/10/2021 21:41

Ours is a pain in the evenings. Snaps, snarls, chews, generally overtired, too busy to sleep in her pen with people coming though... gah. it reminds me of babies that don't know how to switch off.

bargelights · 05/10/2021 21:42

@MsAwesomeDragon, your daycare sounds lovely. How old was your puppy when he started? I am thinking of sending my pup to a daycare one or two mornings a week. It would also be for socialisation purposes since I'd really like him to have the opportunity to play with other dogs. There is a daycare near here that looks great, so I will probably arrange a visit and hopefully a taster session.

GuyFawkesDay · 05/10/2021 21:51

I'd like to find good daycare too. For socialisation more than anything. We do have a good dog walker so that might be an interim we could do.

For the first time tonight I've put the kids in bed and FawkesPup hasn't howled at the bottom of the stairs by the gate. Went to his bed in the gate. Maybe he's finally twigged I'm not leaving him or doing anything exciting??!!!

MakeMeCleanTheHouse · 05/10/2021 22:15

@tizwozliz also followed. I don't use insta and have just uploaded three pics to identify me 😁

You've made me reconsider daycare but a different one. Not many options locally however.

I've sat in the pub with a friend. He only barked twice and with a regular stream of kibble eventually slept.

He weighed 14kg at 14 weeks and is gaining 1kg a week. Teeth...he's lost some but is also growing new teeth alongside baby teeth. How lucky is that! Double the bite 🙄

I rnow realise I've done some impulse training! He will leave food until told to take it even if on his paws. However I've been less conscientious about training and think he's not as reliable

Pup has lost his first puppy tooth this evening!
