Puppy gagging

Hi, I’m really worried about my pup 13wks. It’s the second time this has happened and the first time I called ooh vet nurse and they weren’t concerned, but it’s horrible and I’m not sure what’s ok and what’s not.

We just went to the beach, there was a lot of digging going on and she probably ate some sand. She eats everything. Then we were walking back and she started scavenging and eating those weird spiky seed heads (the sort that get stuck in their fur) and getting all frantic, furiously licking the ground and her stomach was convulsing. Then she did a few sneezes and wretches, didn’t vomit. Now we’re home and she’s asleep on me but her throat is still convulsing in her sleep. She’s relaxed and asleep but it was so awful to watch.

She’s actually already on anti biotics and probiotics for a vomiting episode earlier In the week so I don’t know if this has anything to do with it. I’m so worried!

I'd be concerned she'd eaten something that could cause a blockage, tbh. Keep an eye on her.

Is she eating and drinking okay?

I'd be thinking the same.

We’ve been to the emergency vet. No blockage suspected but probably got something g stuck in her throat and it’s got inflamed. The vet couldn’t see anything but agreed that her throat is definitely bothering her and so gave her pain killers, anti emetic, and something to coat her stomach before she eats for the next few days. And royal canin gastro food which I’m unsure about as royal canin doesn’t score well at all on that allaaboutdogfood website. But she advised it just for a few days.

Glad you've got her sorted op...... expensive night for you 🙈. Hopefully whatever is stuck will work it's way free, you'll be watching her like a hawk next time at the beach!

We have insurance but I haven’t figured out yet whether it will be covered or not!

She’s really sleepy tonight, can only assume it’s a side effect of the pain killer.

I honestly had no idea how much I would love this puppy. I’m astonished by how emotional and worried I have been. I guess I thought I could never be as anxious about her as I am about the kids, but I’m not sure that’s the case!

The Royal Canin low fat gastro food may get bad reviews on dog food review sites but it has worked miracles with our dog in helping him recover from pancreatitis or a gastric upset. It looks disgusting but he loves it. Our vet said start with a tablespoon every hour and work up, the gradually add his regular food in.

We are now sticking to it with a good quality kibble mixed in as he has to eat low fat. The worst part is the outrageous cost.

Have you used the wet or dry? We have been given the dry stuff

The anxiety never stops!! I'm sat here looking at my almost 13 years old boy, worrying about his twilight years.

After a decent nights sleep she'll be back to herself. Pain meds do make them sleepy.

LoveFall · 20/09/2021 02:28

We use the wet as it is what the vet gave us the first time. I think it was because our dog was refusing all food and water. When he started to feel a bit better on the meds it helped hydrate him.

Our dog is older so maybe that is why. He just gobbled down his dinner again!

LoveFall · 20/09/2021 02:34

Yes, I totally get the worry. I was beside myself when our dog was not eating, and whimpering when I cuddled him. That was the pancreatitis. The vet gave him gabapentin for the pain and it really helped.

He is now a happy 10 year old little ball of white fluff. The vet says he has some years left in him for sure.

I do wish he could get younger not older. He truly is my sweet boy.

Your dog will be Ok OP. But I do know how you feel. To be honest, watching a dog vomit is quite disturbing anytime. They do it with their whole body. 🐾🐶😍
