How often do you bath your dog?

In the winter and in wet periods, we bathed our dog quite regularly as he got muddy (cockapoo with curly coat). However, it's been much dryer lately and I can't think when he was last bathed. I'll give him a bath this weekend but I was wondering how often people bath their dogs when they are not obviously dirty?

My Cockapoo is 10 and a half and we only shower him when he's filthy, which in winter is twice a day! In dry weather, it's only when he's rolled in something unmentionable, plus when he goes to the groomer every ten weeks or so.

bloodywhitecat · 09/09/2021 12:58

Only when he needs it, so if he has rolled in something stinky/dirty. He's got a semi long coat (mum is an English Springer spaniel, dad is a Kerry Blue terrier) and he hates water so bathing him distresses him greatly.

SoManyPaws · 09/09/2021 13:00

We do ours about once a month at home. And they go to the groomers for the full works every 3/4 months. We wipe them down if needed in between their monthly wash and brush them every day or two.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 09/09/2021 13:05

Thanks. He's not great about having baths so we haven't bothered for a while but I suddenly thought that maybe he should be having a weekly bath even if not obviously dirty

My older dog had to see a dermatologist because of itchy skin. She said it wasn’t good to bathe dogs regularly. We groom daily and wash beard/bits and rinse feet as needed. Never wash the whole dog!

fitflopqueen · 09/09/2021 13:09

Showered only if she (ESS) has rolled in something or is very muddy so yes she had a ketchup then soapy shower yesterday due to stench of fox, she gets very sad being cleaned with warm water (must be at least a month since last incident). Does swim nearly every day though in local river or reservoir.

Anordinarymum · 09/09/2021 13:11

I have a pug. She gets a shower with me when she smells which is more in the summer than in winter.

foodanfagsjokiing · 09/09/2021 13:18

I have never bathed my dog !

BiteyShark · 09/09/2021 15:56

Mine gets mud rinsed off with water after walks but that is because even if it is dry he finds a muddy bog to dive in.

Every 4-6 weeks he goes to the groomers so has a bath then.

liveforsummer · 09/09/2021 16:49

My little terrier is 18 months old and has been bathed once. Only because the kids wanted to do it not because she needed it. She's short coated and very sleek/shiny. Also very precious and hates being wet or muddy so is forever clean

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 09/09/2021 17:09

Once every 2 years thus far, he's 2 - that was a dead seal incident.
He's a short double coat, doesn't seem to retain mud somehow.

MissyB1 · 09/09/2021 17:15

I have a schnauzer, there fur is like Velcro! Hmm she gets bathed about once a fortnight in good weather, once a week in muddy wet weather. However she has her paws washed every day in winter.
She is high maintenance!

Workinghardeveryday · 09/09/2021 17:19

Every 2 weeks or he stinks, chihuahua. Short haired. Always have! When he was a puppy much more!

Workinghardeveryday · 09/09/2021 17:20

Oh yes and in the sink for paw wash every walk in wet weather/winter

tsmainsqueeze · 09/09/2021 17:20

@foodanfagsjokiing

I have never bathed my dog !
Neither have i ! 2 dogs , both short hair , no skin issues , lovely sleek coats . Eldest 10 ,possibly bathed when tiny pup , hand reared from 3 days old, since then never had a bath. Youngest gets a good wipe over when he rolls in bird shit every now and again.
LoveFall · 09/09/2021 17:34

Every few weeks. He has a white poodle type coat that gets dingy and holds on to sand and dirt. He also gets a mucky rear end sometimes.

He really doesn't enjoy baths but does tolerate them. He gets a huge case of the zoomies when it's done, racing around the house like a lunatic.

Sparklingwine1 · 09/09/2021 18:55

I give my dog little spot washes (paws, underbelly) a few times a week.

He is pure white and has short legs so gets filthy on walks. But the main reason is he loves to kick up grass when we walk him and when we get him home his feet are green!

We never give him full baths though. He is a long haired breed so has to have proper grooming appointments to keep his fur short and they obviously wash him there (about every 8 weeks)

YanTanTethera123 · 09/09/2021 18:58

Only when necessary such as after rolling in fox shit or equally delightful treats.
She’s pretty clean and certainly doesn’t smell normally.

hiredandsqueak · 09/09/2021 19:09

Bella is clipped every six weeks so gets a bath at the groomers. In between then she gets showered when she has rolled in something disgusting (probably once a month) and when she's wet and muddy (short legs so each time it rains). I only use shampoo when she's rolled in something stinky though.

Maneandfeathers · 09/09/2021 20:10

About once a year. He competes in shows quite a bit too and is long coated. It’s easier to just brush the mud off!

MintyGreenDream · 09/09/2021 20:11

Every 3 weeks or so

DramaAlpaca · 09/09/2021 20:13

Two springers here who mostly get bathed after rolling in fox poo. Other than that they don't get bathed very often at all as it's not good for their skin. We take them for a swim in the river instead, they love that.

Frlrlrubert · 09/09/2021 20:18

Two working cockers here who only get bathed when they've rolled in something grim, and it's too cold out to just hose them down outside. Mud brushes out, in summer they do swim in the river a fair bit.

dalmatianmad · 09/09/2021 20:19

I bathed one of my Dalmatians yesterday when she rolled in fox shit.

I don't normally bath them. Its bad for their fur and skin. I just rub these down with a towel if we've had a wet and muddy walk.

TheVolturi · 09/09/2021 20:20

Our shih tzu is 9 months and he has to have a bath every week or he's really whiffy. His eyes get a good rinse around then with running water and he looks much brighter. Our dearly departed jrt had only a handful of baths in his whole 17 years of life.
