How often do you bath your dog?

In the winter and in wet periods, we bathed our dog quite regularly as he got muddy (cockapoo with curly coat). However, it's been much dryer lately and I can't think when he was last bathed. I'll give him a bath this weekend but I was wondering how often people bath their dogs when they are not obviously dirty?

Our lurcher is too big to carry up the stairs to have a bath (and is scared of the stairs so won’t go up himself), so he is never bathed. He gets rubbed down with a towel when he is wet and muddy, a brush down when he is dry if needed. He smells faintly of dog when wet, and smells like biscuits when dry, so happy to leave him well alone bath wise!

nc8766 · 10/09/2021 07:15

When he gets a bit smelly. Once a month maybe, or once every two months.

Short-haired breed.

PieMistee · 10/09/2021 07:17

When it's dry never. When wet and muddy a quick hose everyday.

icedcoffees · 10/09/2021 08:10

About once a month as we live on the estuary and the mud absolutely stinks - and believe me, a quick spray with a hose won't do anything to get the smell out!

He was at the vet last week and they were full of compliments about his health including his coat, so it can't be doing him any harm. He gets a nice warm shower with puppy shampoo and then a treat afterwards while he dries off Smile

CantChatNow · 10/09/2021 09:08

We don't really, Unless he's really filthy or has rolled in something. His coat is white so it's easy to see if there's grub on it and we towel him down after a walk. He actually grooms quite a lot out himself if he's left to it tbh.

tabulahrasa · 10/09/2021 10:20

I’ve had him 6 months, I’ve showered him once, I’ve hosed mud of legs maybe twice, oh and i do clean a front leg every few days because he’s managed to pee on it again.

He does throw himself in the canal fairly regularly though, it’s not exactly the cleanest though, so I doubt that counts, lol

furbabymama87 · 10/09/2021 10:26

About once a fortnight. In between I wash his paws and bum only as he has thick curly fur and it gets matted with poo and he stinks.

SageRosemary · 10/09/2021 11:19

Possibly 4 times over the 7 years we've had our mongrel JRT (possible corgi/CKC/daschund mix) rescue. She'll refuse to go walking if it is already raining and is rarely off lead. She's not keen on water at all but is small enough to fit in the utility sink. Yet, we are frequently complimented on her silky coat and often asked if she's just been washed.

Tinkerbellfluffyboots79 · 10/09/2021 11:26

He’s a year old, golden retriever.
He gets brushed but baths no. If he rolled in something or stunk yes but can’t see why he’d need regular bathing his coat is clean and shiny and he is a healthy boy. Our old lad had bad ears & a skin condition so I don’t get his head wet if he ever does get a wash. I rinse paws if needed & trim claws if needed and fur to keep him looking neat and tidy. He’s not. Show dog so long as he’s brushed and healthy that’s enough for me

BlijEi · 10/09/2021 11:36

We wash ours once a week, sometimes even twice but he has very severe skin allergies. If he didn't I'd probably do once a month.

OldWivesTale · 10/09/2021 11:37

Only when he's rolled in poo. Sometimes I'll just do his feet if they're filthy. I don't think dogs need baths otherwise?

secretnutter · 10/09/2021 11:38

Rarely! A spot wash if she rolls in something disgusting, and thereafter only if she is taking too long to moult, on average once a year I reckon!

Monkeybunkey · 10/09/2021 11:43

Probably only a couple of times a year unless he's rolled in fox shit or similar (thankfully quite a rare event now, was much more often when he was a puppy). Short-haired terrier, brushed/furminated once a fortnight or so as he sheds quite a bit. I keep a towel by the back door to wipe his feet in the winter when he's been out in the garden and by the front door to wipe him down after a wet walk.

magicstar1 · 10/09/2021 11:48

She's a German Shepherd, we've had her a year and washed her twice. That was because she needed a medicated wash for her skin at the beginning. We also have had her groomed twice, but there's no need for regular baths. Sometimes after it rains she'll smell a bit doggy, but it's not a bad smell.

Nomoreusernames1244 · 10/09/2021 11:51

Only when he’s rolled in something.

Interesting observation- first time i didn't have dog shampoo so used the shampoo we did have. After a couple of days he was a bit stinky, so bathed again. Ended up needing to wash him every couple of days, so picked up dog shampoo. Using the dog shampoo he never smells Confused.

Got me wondering if they put something in shampoo that stimulates oil production or something to increase use and sell more.

HarrisMcCoo · 10/09/2021 11:55

Have never bathed her yet. She's 11 months old. she will wash herself in fresh water stream locally whilst playing.

longtompot · 10/09/2021 12:08

@BlijEi

We wash ours once a week, sometimes even twice but he has very severe skin allergies. If he didn't I'd probably do once a month.
Not saying this is the same for your dog, but my friends had a rescue which had a skin allergy due to being bathed too often. They had to gradually wean her off the weekly bathing and it improved her skin no end. Like I said, not saying this is the case with yours at all.

My dog gets a bath every 6-8 weeks or so. Mainly when I gather up the energy to do it. She's a show cocker, hates water, hates being groomed, it's a huge faff, takes hours to do all of it, which probably is what reinforces the hate, but she's so silky and lovely afterwards it's worth it.

Forestcantrun · 10/09/2021 14:57

Mine went to a groomers once. I assume they washed him. I brush him often and He swims most days and has excellent skin and the glossiest coat, doesn't smell. Can't ask for much more.
Other than him shedding less. That would be nice 🤣

AmberRoseGold · 10/09/2021 15:02

Fox shit bath upcoming here. I usually walk with my friend and her cocker rolls in everything, my lab won’t if I tell her not to. Except for today, when she rolled, rolled, rolled. Currently barred from house until after pick up. I don’t want to stink out the school playground after washing her.
But we usually wash on a need to basis. She always looks super groomed and glossy and doesn’t usually smell. But loves to go in any water, from river to muddy puddle, that she sees.

MayorGundersonsDogRufus · 11/09/2021 01:15

Once every couple of months. Except for the youngest of our two who regularly rolls in shit, so he's getting the hose and a good shampoo a couple of times a week at the moment!

Mantlemoose · 11/09/2021 01:37

Stinky long haired rough collie dog - monthly. Border collie - never

ericaandfamily · 11/09/2021 01:42

My cocker/springer spaniel has a full groom and bath every 14 weeks.

He doesn't get bathed in the summer, if he gets muddy or wet, he drives off quick in the heat then I use a dog "dry shampoo" spray and brush him through.

In the winter, if we get back from a walk and he's got very muddy, I'll bathe him with his dog shampoo/conditioner and brush him. He falls asleep in the bath and loves the hairdryer (on cool/warm setting not hot).

I'm lucky everyone comments that he never smells. I do check his paws/pads, eyes and ears once or twice a week though to check no dirt that I need to get out. Touch wood, never had any problems.

weegiemum · 11/09/2021 01:58

Usually only at the groomer (about every 3-4 months, when he starts looking unkempt). He's a labradoodle and gets a bit whiff and gets a bath in between if needed, but mainly just a wipe over and a good towel off after walks. In lockdown when the groomers were shut he got bathed more often and dh trimmed round his bum as he got a bit dirty (had been due his groom the week everything closed!).

He'd happily get showered off every day though. He loves his baths!

Notapheasantplucker · 11/09/2021 02:42

Just when he stinks, probably once every couple of months. He hates baths though, he looks so betrayed every single time.

bluetongue · 11/09/2021 02:44

Not since he was a puppy. My boy is a whippet and grooms himself anyway so he’s always looking shiny and clean Smile
