Dog smells of cat pee

My 8 year old springer spaniel has started to smell of cat pee over the last 3 weeks or so. At first we thought he was rolling in some in the garden and bathed him. Within hours the smell was back. I've been flannel washing around his penis in case he's dribbling urine but the smell remains as strong as ever. I've sniffed him all over 🤢 and it's not his mouth or ears. It may be stronger around his undercarriage but it's hard to tell and it's not an ammonia-y smell but more like that distinctive Tom-cat odour.

He's not had a change in diet. He's not drinking or weeing more than usual. He was licking his back paws a lot, but that's because he rubbed some sore patches hillwalking in August - the patches have now healed and his paws smell normal.

What could this be? Time for the vet??

I suspect possibly a low grade wee infection so getting him checked out would be my suggestion.

YanTanTethera123 · 08/09/2021 17:10

And take a wee sample if you can.

is he smoking cannabis? Grin

Taking a wee sample could prove challenging...

Fox pee /poo in the garden? I found that far more resistant to washing out of a dogs coat. Tomato sauce seemed to banish the small once and for all. Some dogs seem to think hint of fox is the best deodorant there is.
Just a thought.

SirSidneyRuffDiamond · 08/09/2021 17:27

Not fox - I am familiar with particular perfume of choice.

I would get him checked by the vet.

Feeding Turmeric can cause cat piss odour in dogs & horse for a while and a dog safe type of cinnamon can be added that stops it.

Artichokeleaves · 08/09/2021 19:21

Is he rubbing up against or under bushes outside that's a regular cat marking spot? Mine reeks of cats pee when he's been peeing up against bushes that the cat has been spraying on.

Do you have any smelly plants? Himalayan balsam smell like urinals to me!

Otherwise I think maybe vets check. Hope you find and can sort whatever it is.

SirSidneyRuffDiamond · 08/09/2021 19:51

He's not eaten turmeric to my knowledge - unless his usual food has changed recently to include it. I'll check the ingredients list.

I should have mentioned that we visited my parents last week for 3 days and we washed him before we went. The smell stayed for our visit and they have no garden so all his outside activity was chaperoned - no rolling or rubbing against anything.

I think I'll call the vet tomorrow and ask for advice.

My dogs roll in animal pee , foxes , deer etc. Fox pee stinks. Are you sure it's not that.

soddingkitten · 09/09/2021 21:19

Is a cat getting in to your home through a dog or cat flap and peeing in his bed?
