No dogs nails should be long enough to touch the floor - not just greyhounds.

A more significant issue for sighthounds, though, as their feet are typically more “knuckled up” than other types.

Genuine question here - my elderly lurcher has very long nails. He's terrified of clippers, and I've actually paid for sedation for them to be cut. But you can literally only trim a millimetre before you get to the quick - presumably why he's so scared due to having had this experience. What are you supposed to do in this situation? We have a dremmel but it obviously doesn't solve the issue!

CMOTDibbler · 04/09/2021 09:31

I have a Saluki greyhoundy lurcher who is terrible to nail clip and also has the extra strong saluki nails which never wear down. After spending years and years doing desensitisation, trying files, dremels etc we came to the conclusion that it was better to just get on with the job, so now every two weeks we put his muzzle on, and hold him tight to get it done in a couple of minutes. Take his muzzle off and a treat and he's fine - he just hates his paws being held (he had his dew claws removed as a puppy before he was rescued and we think it was that).
@FazedNotPhased the quick grows as long as the nails so you have to take that tiny bit off every week to push the quick back. It will shrink back from the nail edge

Thank you @CMOTDibbler - the vet was absolutely useless when we asked so we'll try this! He's going to delight in having it done every week 😂

@FazedNotPhased I don't have an answer but we have same issue with ours so I'm also needing an answer for this.

(Also some of her nails are black so the vet refused to do those as they can't see.)

Nail Maintenance for Dogs on facebook is a great resource. It shows the correct way to trim nails to help the quick reduce in size. Also great ways to desensitise a nervous dog
