Those with a cat and dog, where do they sleep at night?

Currently dcat sleeps in the kitchen/dining room with the door shut. She always has done and seems to sleep well. We bring our puppy home in 3 weeks and have a crate in the livingroom. I’m worried about sleeping arrangements In the future. Do I keep them separate? How does it work with me taking pup out at night? As I have to go through to the kitchen to get outside. I was thinking of taking her to the front garden 🙈🙈 but not sure.

Help lol

Cats in kitchen and utility, dog in hall, but we are blessed with lots of space.

Tulipvase · 27/08/2021 19:41

We have an elderly cat and a 6 month twatador. The cat sleeps in whatever bedroom she gains access to and the dog in the kitchen. Thankfully cat doesn’t stray downstairs at night as she is the only thing the dog barks at. We’ve moved her food/litter tray upstairs too.

womaninatightspot · 27/08/2021 19:43

Conservatory. The dog annoys the cat by trying to play so by day they are enemies but at night and nap times the cat snuggles up tobthe dog.

freshFortunes · 27/08/2021 19:44

When they were puppies, they slept downstairs in the dining room with a night light and puppy pads. Once trained they slept in cages downstairs or in the bedroom. Now there is just one old boy left and he sleeps on the bed because he finds the cage uncomfortable and sometimes asks to go out in the night. The cat has always slept on (often in) the bed. DP had to be ok with these arrangements before he became DP. Previous potential partners failed on this 😂

I really wouldn’t worry about the cat. They’ll settle again after being disturbed. My cats have free run of the house, one sleeps in the hall, one in the landing. Never hear a peep out of either. Dog sleeps on the landing. I have adult dc coming back in the small hours and the cats must be woken up but I don’t know anything about it.

Jinnybean · 27/08/2021 19:54

I’d love dcat to sleep with us/have free roam of the house but she wakes us up at 1/2/3 meowing and running around lol

Dog sleeps at my feet. Cat sleeps next to my head.

TroysMammy · 27/08/2021 19:57

I think he sleeps on the floor in the spare room because when my alarm clock goes off and I'm sitting on the toilet he flings the bathroom door open and sits on the laundry box watching me. At the moment he is very interested in the toilet paper especially when I'm wiping my bum with it Confused

RoseDog · 27/08/2021 20:00

The cat and dog sleep on the bed, dp, the dog, me then the cat!

reallyworriedjobhunter · 27/08/2021 20:02

My cat has free run of the house at night and often wakes us up for a conversation. But I love him so much that I refuse to do anything about it.

Colouringaddict · 27/08/2021 20:05

Unless your breeder has already trained the pup to use a crate, you can’t just shove him in it and walk away. It will take a few nights to train them into it, either by you sleeping beside the crate, or having the crate in your room and moving yourself/the crate little distances away until they feel secure in it.

MissEDashwood19 · 27/08/2021 20:10

Cat and dog sleep curled up together on the sofa in our kitchen. We have a small dog and he's always been very friendly with the cat, so we have never supervised their interactions. Cat can go in and out via cat flap. This arrangement has always worked for us. Dog is not free roaming at night.

Iwantcollarbones · 27/08/2021 20:16

Ddog sleeps in his bed at the foot of our bed. I would prefer him to sleep in another room but he’s a very clingy rescue and it’s far quieter and much less heartbreaking to let him sleep there. According to DH, the dcat waits until I am asleep then walks up me and sleeps on my shoulder. I have tried locking him out in the past but he knows how to open doors and he doesn’t wake me up so he gets away with it.

icedcoffees · 27/08/2021 20:54

Our dog sleeps in our bed, and the three cats sleep downstairs.

But just to warn you, unless the breeder has crate-trained, you'll need to either spend a few weeks sleeping downstairs with him, or move the crate into your bedroom and slowly move it further away as he settles.

Very, very few puppies will just happily crawl into a crate and go to sleep - crate training is tough and not all puppies like the crate.

Up until 2 days ago one dog slept on the sofa and the other in her bed under a table in the kitchen, but I have got sick of the living room smelling like dog so I bought him a bed and put it in our gym room. He seems happy to have his own space and the living room doesn't smelly doggy.

blaisealex · 27/08/2021 21:12

I don't have a dog but two cats. They both have free roam. One sleeps on the sofa. The other sleeps on my bedroom floor next to my bed. Until 2 am. Then he jumps on the bed, wakes me up and gives me kisses and cuddles for an hour. Every night. Literally. I wake up with his face touching my face as he rubs his nose on my lips. We then snuggle our faces together and have a cuddle. 🥰 I don't have the heart to do anything about it. It's so sweet and despite being woken up, I secretly love it.

MulanIsChinese · 27/08/2021 21:14

DPup sleeps in a playpen in the living room and DCat sleeps in the kitchen. Playpen is a serious game changer!

AnnaDyne · 27/08/2021 21:17

cats roam the house. I have one (the same one) on my bed every night. The others are wherever they want to be. They rule the house

The dogs are on the kids beds with the doors shut if they're here, and in the crate if the kids are with their dad. I can't leave the dogs downstairs overnight because of the cats - they'd eat their food and try to talk to them all the time. the dogs just really want the cats to be their friends. (the cats really don't rate the dogs at all).

mayblossominapril · 27/08/2021 21:18

Cat sleeps on the boiler in the garage as she can’t be trusted not to attack us in the night. Dogs sleep in the kitchen.

Candyapple49 · 27/08/2021 21:19

My house is open plan . The cat sleeps in the lounge - kitchen - diner with the door to the stairs shut . The dog sleeps in our bed . The cat would love to sleep in our bed too , but we tried and he pounced on our heads wanting to play and purred throughout the night !

Miniroofbox · 27/08/2021 21:19

in the utility. They sleep in the same bed (or at least, they’re all in the one bed when I golden in the morning).

nancybotwinbloom · 27/08/2021 21:20

The dog sleeps at the bottom of the bed. He only gets on once we are asleep. If my DH is away I wake up and he is on his side with his head on his pillow.

I don't know where the cats sleep. Maybe on the e sofa. Maybe on the blanket we leave for them? They have beds also.

Miniroofbox · 27/08/2021 21:23

Last cat had the roam of the house and I wasn’t starting that again with this kitten. I can’t be doing with the 5am wake ups middle of the night ceilidhs from a cat.

MrsRobbieHart · 27/08/2021 21:27

With old dog (RIP) both cats would snooze wherever they liked. Sometimes they would both be found sleeping on him. He was a big soft golden retriever.

With new dog they don’t like her so they sleep upstairs. On my bed, on my windowsill, on my bedroom floor or on DS2s bed or windowsill.

Datsandcogs · 27/08/2021 21:33

Dogs shut in the utility room.
Cat has the run of the house, she’s in wi5 me for part of most nights. Sleeps cuddled into my legs and then sits on my face for early morning cuddles!
